I'm trying to use my minidsp umim1 usb mic with audiotool. However the app doesn't use the USB mic but instead just continues to use the phone (Samsung s7 edge) internal mic.

I've tried using other recorder apps to record audio using the umik1, and they all always ask me to allow the app to use the USB device first before it works. But not for audio tools app, no such prompt ever comes out. Is there support for usb audio mic in audiotool?

Which other recorder apps have you used that support the umik1, and what version of Android are you running?

Thanks,
Julian

Yes, those guys have written their own USB driver for the microphone: it's not part of Android. This allows them to offer the option of either using the USB mic or the other mic(s).

My understanding is that from Lollipop onwards, some devices support USB microphones natively (i.e. without special driver code). In those cases, plugging in a USB mic will automatically result in the mic being used - it will appear as the Main Mic - and programmers do not have any control over that behaviour. Since AudioTool by default uses the Main Mic, those devices, when running AudioTool, will use the plugged-in USB mic.

Indeed, some people have reported success using AudioTool with a USB mic.

It seems to me that until Android fully supports USB mics natively (so that the app programmer can select between the USB mic or other mics in code) then this is going to be a hit or miss affair :-(

Oh that's unfortunate, the manual for audiotool did write that one can load a UMIK-1 calibration file to use with audiotool, which can be quite misleading for people to belive that the UMIK-1 will work with the app.

Thanks anyways.

Oh anyways does it help if I can actually use my scarlett 2i2 audio interface to get music to be playing natively through my Google music app to the scarlett headphone output Jack with the scarlett plugged in through usb too.

Good catch! The manual should be referring to the MiniDSP PMIK, not the UMIK. I have changed it accordingly. Not sure how that happened.

I'm not sure I understand that setup, as I'm not familiar with the Scarlett device.

As long as the input is analog, and presented via the headset jack, it should work.

I've just confirmed that the UMIK-1 DOES in fact work with AudioTool.

I have it connected to an nVidia Shield K1 tablet via a USB-OTG cable. The tablet is running Marshmallow.

I just select use the Front microphone and the UMIK-1 is engaged.
