Jason,
Sounds like you better get into analogue recording. Though with your
skills you could DIY a cutter yourself and record direct to disk.
I recently ordered a few 7-inch singles off http://thirdmanrecords.com/news.html
and I'm interested in how they turn up. If White's approach to
recording is like that guitar he made on It Might Get Loud, then I
expect to be very happy.

I would absolutely love to do some sort of all analog, 2-mic,
tube-o-phile recording. I wonder how difficult it is to get really
amazing recordings. Unfortunately I'm totally not in the music scene
anywhere.

Jason,
Well I have a tube Revox G36, that works but I need to rebuild it and
change a few things. But those portable Rek o Kut cutters come up
regularly on eBay and they don't go for all that much money. Recording
for me is mostly to capture the kid's violin work. Phil has played
with modding the cheap Chinese mic capsules but mics are going to be
the sticking point. Going from air to electric signals accurately
still baffles me.

Robert,
I've been reading that Simpson stuff for awhile. I guess I should search out recordings that use his mics. On first look it doesn't make sense but that doesn't mean that much. Thanks for the links.

Jason,
Have you checked out Pat Metheny's Orchestrion? It's kind of like a
"player" backing orchestra. I expect it will itch your DIY bug. Why
record music when you can play it live?
