Do any of you guys use a solder pot? I was thinking of trying one to tin my
iron, stripped wires, and part leads.

This is motivated because I got some of this "litz" wire before I realized how
hard it is to use. I'm still interested in the wire type, but apparently am
not fully equipped to deal with it.

I have never used one, but they are also supposed to be very nice for
baring and tinning a section of enameled magnet wire.

I think that's the same problem with the litz; it's got an enamel coating that
you have to burn off to get solder to stick.

John,
I've got a 800-degree Hexacon pot that I've used for years. I don't
know how people can live without one. I use magnet wire everywhere.
And while I'm at it Hakko solder irons are really nice units as well.
I never loose my Weller WCPCT anymore.

OK, I'm sold. This one is much smaller than the other ones I found, which is
more like what I want. I don't plan on dipping boards in it, just small
wires.

Do you find that it tips or spills easily? Is it messy? Does the dross make
a mess?

Do you adjust the temp, or just leave it full blast?

John,
Well I only dip wire in mine and I wish it was smaller. On the pot I
linked there is no temp adjustment it's a plug and play. There is no
off/on switch either. If I'm wiring up a chassis I leave it on until
the job is done, so 8 to 10 hours. It takes about 15 minutes to get up
to temp. I never considered trying a lower temp pot as I use a fair
amount of Litz wire and at 800 degrees 80 to 200 strand wire is about
2 to 4 seconds held in the pot.
Get the dross cup attachment. Dross is not a big problem but if I'm
doing a lot of Litz tinning the enamel creates a bit of dross,
probably a 5mm cube of junk every few hours. It's much cleaner then
trying to burn off enamel with a soldering iron. It's heavy and very
stable, I've never even considered tipping would be an issue.
There could be smaller pots out there but I have no idea.
