Hi all,

Just writing to give a short intro, and what I hope to learn
from this group.

I'm a recent college graduate with a degree in
communications. I did a little DJ and production work for my
university's radio station. I'm interested in a career in audio
editing.

I see myself working in a home studeo doing freelance for
film/TV, audio drama, commercials, podcasts, etc. My clients will send
me their bits and pieces of audio, and I'll put them together.

The
two main hurtles I have to overcome are equipment and experience--I
have neither.

While working with WZIP, they were able to make their
software partially accessible by using screen access software that I
was unfamiliar with, but they also used touch screens. As a person
with a vvisual impairment, it was a very difficult stretch, but I know
with the right equipment, I can work productively.

After I have the
right equipment, I can then, hopefully gain experience. I've attempted
to contact radio stations I'm interested in working for, but have met
with no success. I've also tried networking with several trance DJs
via facebook, and they've also not been helpful.

The main questions I
have for this group are:

1. What equipment are you using to produce/
edit audio?
2. where can a recent college graduate gain experience in
this field?
3. Are there any other blind audio editors/producers on
this list?

I look forward to networking with you!

All the best,
Chelsea

Hi Chelsea. I'm using the goldwave audio editing program on a pc running
windows xp media edition. Goldwave works very well with either Jfw or
window-eyes.

I didn't have great luck when using Goldwave.  It seems the program experienced memory leaks, and slowed my system down to a crawl after no more than 20Mins of use.
Still, it was a decent program.
Of course, I know of many who never experienced such problems.

just my opinion, but reaper puts goldwave to shame...though goldwave does
offer a few little odds and ends that reaper doesn't.
However, for pure audio editing and control, reaper kills Goldwave.
Both are tools in a tool box to be used accordingly. I even use audacity
from time to time for certain things.
Allot of the died in the wool sound forge guys are switching to reaper
because it'll do the same things, but much more easily from a user interface
perspective.
Regards
Colin

Hi all

I just wanted to give a short intro.

I've been interested in sound editing and production for quite a long time
now as a hobby for my own personal projects. These include audio tutorials
for friends to help them when they don't have access to computers and online
material. I also want to put together good quality podcasts and internet
radio shows. I want my work to sound professional and be nicely edited to
give a polished presentation so I'm hoping to learn a few things by being a
part of the list.

As far as audio software goes, I have Sound forge, Studio Recorder and
access to Goldwave but that's my least prefered editor. Studio Recorder is
the easiest to use but I'm prepared to take a look at new programs

I use Goldwave as well.

In addition to the screen readers mentioned by Tim, Goldwave works pretty
well with System Access and NVDA.

Hey, like most has said on here, Reaper is probably the best place to start if you are on a PC. ProTools if you are on a mac. Othere than that to get started you may want a small audio interface, aka a usb or firewire sound card. a good microphone or two, and decent headphones. But this all depends on your budget and what you plan to do specifically. If you want feel free to contact me, as i am a bit of a gear freak and probably make specific recommendations once i zone in on exactly what u want to do.

Steve.

Thanks, Steve! I'll email you off list and tell you what I'm thinking as far as audio stuff goes.

Take care,
Chelsea

Hi Chelsea, I use Sound Forge with JAWS.  I am considering switching to a Mack and using Pro-Tools.  The problem with radio stations is that many of them us a system called, Audio Vault.  It is very much not blind friendly.  The stations are more automated than ever before and will probably get worse.  Many of them do not have much of a staff.  The traffic reports come from an outside source and also the news.

Hello list,
As long as we are doing intros. I am Julie and have no experience with
sound mixing or editing since my vision loss. Ran a few mixing boards for
our high school way back when but was sighted back then.
Would love to learn all I can about the software available and how to work
it.
thanks for all the input from you. I'll be watching and learning. not sure
I will have any input for the beginning but sure I will have questions along
the way.

It's a $50 app which considering all it does is a bargain, and it's
good for two versions of the software before you would have to buy an
upgrade. That being said it gives you as long as you need to use the
demo.
