I'm an amateur nature recordist.
I use Studio Recorder, Bookport Plus, Edirol hr9, Sennheiser shotgun and
other microphones for recording nature.
I also use Goldwave.

Hi,
I'm Courtney Curran, I'm in college right now, I'm majoring in broadcasting. For my audio needs, I use Amadeus Pro on my mac with the Blue Snowball mic, and sometimes the M Audio Producer mic.

HiCourtney,

I also use the blue snowball for audio recording at present. I was wondering, do you find the recordings to be low at times even when the gain is turned up all the way? I'm thinking of upgrading to the blue yeti or even the blue yeti pro.

Thanks.

Hi
Yes, I do find them low, so I'm glad I still have my m Audio Producer mic from my first audio production class, as that was the one we were required to have. But, I do notice that the recordings are very low, and sometimes even slightly distorted. Have you noticed any distortion when using the blue snowball?

I'm envious of the Yeti Pro myself.  It has a mute switch, and environmental settings that are quite nice.

Hi, COurtney,

What are your plans for when you complete your studies?

I worked for a few years in the broadcasting field, and found it fascinating.  Yet, it was highly competitive and was a love/hate job.

Yes, I like recording bird sounds.
I bought a parabola last year, but I have not had much chance to use it and
found it very unwieldy.
I have some of my recordings on http://www.birdblind.org, ranging from very
bad to pretty good.
I think my wood thrush recording and Baltimore orioles are among my better
ones.

We have some nice nature sounds up in the Northeast.
WHen I had my old Palm Treo, I found that it had a particularly good quality audio recorder on board.  I use to take it out and record various things; birds included.

Hi,
I'd like to broadcast on an all-news radio  station, one such as  to WTOP in Washington, D.C. That's my ultimate goal after finishing college.

I was a Southern Gospel DJ at a station in Pennsylvania back in the 80's back in the days of vinyl & carts.  This was also when you needed a FCC license to be a "Broadcaster/Board Operator" Our station used a Gates 8 channel sound board.  I have a 16 channel Alesis multimix with 100 effects now that fits on my bookshelf.  The Gates 8 channel took up half the studio back then.

One morning I walked in and found out that our station which was owned by a company in Maryland had sold us to another company in Maryland and we changed formats to Contemporary Christian which came along with new station letters, new management, & eventually a new sound board.

I moved out of the area and quit the station and the broadcasting business about a week before they went CD and got the new board.  I heard that in order to make room for the new equipment in the small station they had to make the announcer stand while he did his thing.

Later I did an internet show for ACB but it wasn't the same as flesh & blood radio.  With today's technology it seems anyone with an internet connection is calling themselves a DJ and playing MP3's on an internet station.  That's not to say everyone who is on an internet station is doing it poorly just that the term DJ has been devalued by the cacophony of internet radio stations and internet DJ's out there.

I admire anyone who is willing to work to acquire good audio editing skills either for production work or for broadcasting.

I have Goldwave but haven't had the time to get to know it yet.  I bought it in March when I had a total vision loss which I'm hoping is temporary.  I am usually a low partial and use Jaws & Magic on the computer.  Mostly I use Adobe Audition 3 which is what I'm using again now with some difficulty because my Magic is set at 18 magnification.  I'm waiting for Adobe to release a 64 bit version of Audition but I don't think they have released it yet.

I do miss the radio, and I love audio production but would never go on the internet as it stands now.  I might consider a flesh & blood station again although it's been 26 years since I was on the air with a flesh & blood station.

Merv, I'm betting even traditional Christian stations have gone the way of voice-tracking, to save costs and all.

If I had to choose one main gripe about the industry, it's the revolving door effect.  In a two-year period, I saw endless people come and go, nearly on a monthly basis, and across all levels.
It's to be a business heavily reliant upon networking.  I found this out the hard way, when the station manager who gave me my break, suddenly quit over one of many spats with the owner, and left.  The guy who replaced him didn't know me from Sam, as well as the other staff.  We were told we'd be fine, but found ourselves canned the next day.
It was only due to that same old friend's connections, that I was able to move onto another market and keep broadcasting in any capacity.

Even worse: I ran into plenty of redtape as well; stemming from the need for TTS software on the station's equipment.  THe insurance company threatened to void the station's policy if they allowed the installation of non-authorized equipment and or software.
The engineering union was also a buzz over some licensing issues that was indirectly associated with my board operations.

Some of these issues were settled; however, my point is to show how and why I lost my enthusiasm for a career in that field.
The larger the market, the bigger the egos, and multiplied problems.

THis doesn't even go into the area of voice-tracking replacing on-air staff; which as you referenced, diminished the value and essential need for qualified, professional, bona fide, broadcasters.
The "DJ" is dead.

Yup,

but the regular yeti has the mute switch and the 4 settings as well. The thing that sets the pro apart tis the 24 bit rate and the ability to use analog with the xlr connection.

The thing I dislike about the Yeti is its size. It's rather large. I've seen one, and found a couple of reviews funny because they mentioned the same criticism about the size.
