Hey all:
This is colin from edmonton alberta.
I'm a semi-pro musician, a term loosly used to describe what I do as a
guitarist lol.
I've been in regular gigging for pay bands for about 10 years or so, but
I've been spanking the plank for about 20.
My strongest Genre's right now are classic blues, bluesrock, classic rock,
alternative rock, classic and new country and disco/funk.

I've had some experience with recording both in home/basement studios and in
a live environment.
I have a pretty well rounded understanding of recording as it relates to
your typical instruments such as guitars, basses, drums, keys, vocals etc.
I definitely don't know everything about all of that, so I joined this list
to offer my knowledge, and hopefully pick up some more.
I'm currently using Reaper with REAAccess on an XP PC running JFW11 as my
main recording/mixing/editing/post production software.
I don't do much home recording right now...but I just moved, so now I have
some space to set up a little basement studio and invest in some audio
hardware such as audio I/O and mikes/pre's and monitors etc.
The band I'm currently in, an R&B meets disco, meets a little 80's rock,
uses a fostex MR-8 for live off the floor recordings, and I've been using
reaper to mix and edit the tracks a bit. Our overall mike compliment is
less than stellar, so the source recordings Don't give me a whole lot to
work with lol.

anyway, I hope to be able to participate here.
Regards
Colin

one of the best ways to learn reaper is to use the F12 training mode.
You also have to have ReaAccess installed if you want to use a screen
reader. Reaper is useless otherwise.
Just press F12 to enter training mode and then you can press any key, or any
key combination and you will get a spoken description of what it does.
Very very useful. Press F12 again to exit training mode.

also, F4 will open up the actions list, where you can do term and phrase
searches and obtain a list of functions. you can execute those functions
from this window, or you can assign a hotkey if one doesn't exist for that
function already.
Also, you can access various context menus by using your applications key
plus Alt, shift or the control key.
Control T for new track, F7 to arm a track, F8 to toggle monitor functions,
R to record, space bar to stop record or play.
Home or end to go to the beginning or end of a track.
hit tab to open up a list of options for the track you are on. Hit shift
tab to open the master track options.
F will open fx for the track you are on, and you can enter a search for the
type of effect you want.
Once you find the effect you want to use, hit enter on the effect in the
list, and it'll begin the effect in real time. Hit escape to exit the fx
window, and now you can use shift plus P to open the effects parameter
window to change the fx parameters on the track you have highlighted.
Use arrow keys to switch between tracks.

All that should get you going.

Don't forget, without ReaAccess, none of this is possible with a screen
reader.

Colin

your hardware should handle the direct monitoring or real time
monitoring as you call it. Do you not hear what you are recording
with out turning on the monitor in reaper? what hardware are you
using to record with? What's your set up like and what are you trying
to record?

ahh you are using your built in sound card. There in lies the problem.
You can try turning the samples buffer size down but i don't know
that it will get low enough that there is no delay on a built in
sound card. Unfortunately your only other option may be spending some
money on an audio interface

you can only turn the samples down so far though before you get artifacts in
the audio...and you can't lower them enough to eliminate the latency issues
when using an onboard soundcard.
There are plenty of relatively cheap audio interfaces for basic in/out sound
that will nearly eliminate the latency for you.
That is one thing that audacity does offer, the ability to offset your sound
card's latency to 0 latency by using a negative buffer.
Reaper doesn't do that, likely to maintain audio integrity.

Hi guys,

allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Johnny Chilelli from Erie, PA. I am only just now starting to assemble my home studio, but I have more to learn then you can collectively imagine. <grin>. So far, I own a Kirzweil K2600, a Tascam FW1884daw and my new 13 inch mbp. i think I know how to hook things together via a midi to usb adapter and a firewire port, but honestly, beyond that, i'm in the dark so to speak. And I am certainly open for suggestions. I wanna try to use GarageBand and perhaps Audacity or Goldwave right now because i don't wish to get into any more cost for an expensive software package because I don't know enough about what I am doing to justify doing so. Has anyone had any experience with the FW 1884 desk? someday, I wish to create a cd of my own music for my wife and friends. I also have aspirations to produce my own internet radio program, and perhaps do some local studio interviewing.

Blessings,

Johnny Chilelli
