Today Andrew started to try and get the original liquid heater/cooler
out. Major dashboard job... everything must come out.

The intention is to replace the element with a 12V ceramic one.

Swen, Japio

any idea what the correct procedure for removing the heater unit is? I
looked this morning, the unit seems well tucked up under the dashboard
but to some extent seems accessible.

Hello Simon,
Remoing the heater system does indeed mean the complete dash has to be
removed, and the Freshairduct as well
it is however possible to take out the heat exchanger.
This involves removing center console, glovebox, etc.
So by no means an easy job.

Japio

glovebox is out, center console is pretty much disassembled but not
full out.

Heat exchanger - you mean the lower black box in the photo?

Looks like lower case comes off with the clips.

Must say I am thinking maybe just to put something like this on...

If you have the lower box out there might be a 900 Watts electric heater
in there already, but above that is the heat exchanger.
blow out the coolant first!
200 Watts isn't anywhere near enough to get anything warm in your car.
if you want a proper heating, your best bet would be a webasto or
eberspächer aux. heater. this will use petrol or diesel. (0,2l/h) to give
around 3.5KW off heating output. you connect this to the water circuit of
your original heater and you wil have real audi heating comfort.

Looks like the decisions are made at least, now.

First news is I have the heater core out - it was in the lower black
casing shown on the photo. It is liquid (Japio, no electric element).
At least it is out without removing the dashboard. Heater core size is
21x18x4 cm, by the way.

Second, this is a useful but rambling article on it:
http://www.evsource.com/articles/heater_compare.php From this I am
sure I will not go for a Webasto type system - instead I will place a
ceramic system connected into the main pack. Probably just one core.

It might be this one from EV Source, http://www.evsource.com/tls_heaters.php
or maybe two of these - http://www.infraredheaters.com/ceramic.htm#Type%20HFE
maybe in series to cope with the V going up to 360V. This will be 1kW.

Hello Simon,
The 900Watts heater I was talking about seems to be an option.
Audi partnumber is: 8Z0 819 011 B for 900Watts ptc type.
Or 8Z0 819 011 A for 1500Watts ptc type.
They will both fit the modified bottom piece 6Q0 819 875 C
I don't know any prices but one of those may save you a lot of work.

if you find a A2 diesel on a scrapyard somewhere there should be one in
there.
Our modelyear 2004 tdi both have 1500Watts heaters.
ofcaurse they all are 12volt

Hello again.
I've just been reading John waylands article (wich is, over ten years
old)and must say that i do not agree with wim on the subject of webasto/
eberspecher heaters.
In all of my cars i bouht new from volkswagen i ordered the webasto option
and have been really satisfied until now.
I know having a fueled boiler in the car is somewhat against all
principles of driving electric, but if you take into account the
efficiency of such a heater system wich gives a real BIG heater output:
converting fuel directly into heat, and the comfort it gives you wen you
need the heat, i myself would still go for webasto.
the sytme has only a small pump and fan to run on E-power, the heat comes
from the fuel.
If you do not want to have the longest driving range from your battery,
than heating electric is a way to go.
I don't want to criticise your disission just want to point out that on
one man bad expirience over ten years ago, there's a lot of positive
expiriences as well.
Happy Converting
Yours in awe
Jaap (japio)

Wow you're right - 1997!! I didn't spot that.

You could well be right re: webasto heaters, I have no direct
experience, just a friend here who has one in his Rover and it is
broken... and has on board electronics... and a pump... and liquid...
and burns hydro-carbon fuel...

So since I have now ripped out the liquid system... I will continue to
go for electric. In fact I have just ordered 3 elements, 400W each,
120V, to wire up in series.

Hello Simon,

I agree to Jaap and follow the same approach in my Audi A2 conversion.
We use a Webasto heater and leave the heat exchanger unchanged.
Instead of the motor cooling cycle some extra tubes and a little
reservoir are build. I use canola oil as fuel and benefit from direct
heat conversion with full comfort.

If you go for electric heating this will definitely reduce range, but
may be Italian winters are not as frosty as Germans and you will
seldom use it.
