I have a 320km ride listed on the calendar this season. It includes a 4.5km category two climb up Eungella range averaging 12 per cent and two category three climbs up Eton and Sarina Ranges.

Would it be possible for people who successfully complete this ride to use it as a qualifier for next year's ACE?

G'day Peter

Sounds good to me. Maybe other ride organisers, especially outside Vic, could let me know of other Audax rides that would be good qualifiers for the ACE 250.

We seem to get the qualification process just about right, but then again we spend a deal of time individually e-mailing riders, especially non Audaxians, checking on their rides/riding/finishing times and the like.

This year I erred with 2 overseas riders whose qualifiers were more difficult to gauge and unfortunately they DNFed otherwise the other few that DNFed had done to the 250 previously, done the AAC 200 or had successfully completed the 2010-3 Peaks in more difficult circumstances.

Any feedback on the ACE 250 qualifying rides/process appreciated.

Hi Alan,
Having been the first "nutter" to complete Dave H and Liz James' "Warburton/Lk Mtn Lap" ride on Sat 9 Jan this year I can thoroughly recommend it as worthy of being a qualifier for the ACE250. It has approx 4275m of ascent over a total of 216km!! So thats almost 20m/km,........ slightly more than the Alpine Classic and Fitz's Epic.

Having completed 2 ACEs I think qualifying rides for it should include several sustained15km+ climbs and "meters of ascent per total kms" of 15m/ km or more.

My rule of thumb for wether a ride is what I call "hilly" is anything over 10m/km, "mountainous" 15m/km.
When I rode the '09 Dungog 600 (6065m in 620km = 9.78m/km) I remember Garry Armsworth commenting that his rule of thumb was 8m/km for "hilly".

Cheers
Fraser

It certainly would.
Or maybe the ACE should be a qualifier for the Snowies Epic as a "one day" ride?? Just joking.......

G'day Fraser

Thanks for that.Good stuff.

Maybe the Ride Calendar could have a symbol or something against rides considered as ACE 250 qualifiers.

Might be a way of attracting new folk/members to Audax and the Audaxian way cos all the rides which make up the Alpine Classic attract riders who are used to participating in some of the more popular events which do not necessarily require the same level of self reliance/thought/skills in terms of nutrition, hydration, clothing, spares and repairs (If you need it - You carry it/If it breaks - You fix it) although the AAC, being a more public, event by necessity, does molly coddle the participations a bit more than a normal Audax ride.

I'm not joking. I didn't enter for the Snowy Epic until after I did the ACE. The Snowy Epic proved to be about 75 km more in
distance and 4 3/4 hours more in time.

A very wise strategy indeed, Alan. I myself had intended to have a crack at the Snowy Epic again this year (but as the one day effort this time) after 5000km and 50000m of rides, inc my 2nd ACE, between mid Sept '10 and late Jan '11but eventually was unable too be there.

When I said "just joking" I was thinking, "lets not complicate Pete's relatively simple SE organisation (compared to the ACE) with compulsory qualifiers". Certainly as an unofficial qualifier for the SE, the ACE is most suitable, despite having slightly less overall metres of ascent / total kms.

Cheers

PLEASE NOTE:
I am looking for someone who is already going over to France or may know someone living in England or Europe.

While I empathise with the desire to do PBP in the fastest possible time, to minimise the suffering if nothing else, surely it would be more in the spirit of the event to try to do the fastest possible time while using the huge amount of fixed support already provided, rather than to add to traffic on the other roads?

Just sayin'...

I dunno quite where this is going.

Matt has asked for support achieving a particular goal.  He has complete PBP multiple times and unsupported has blitzed much of the field.

I think it a legitimate request and if I were going to be in France at the right time I'd consider helping.

Pardon me for expressing an opinion on this list as an experienced, if semi-retired randonneur and PBP ancien.
One question? What did I say that was "negative" or "un-nice"?
For the record, I am not aware of any previous discussion of this matter. To quote the OP: "The last time i sent out this message, i did not get any reply."

Hi Matt - I will be based in Loudeac from around late Monday evening/ night if that's any use to you on your way back (I won't arrive there until after you've been through on your way to Brest).  Happy to support you there if we can work out a way to stay in contact.  Best of luck with achieving your goal.

Cheers

Sandy

Matthew,
I might be able to assist you with some contacts off-list as I spent some time in both Paris and London and have a few contacts  especially in a London based football club. It will probably be a lot easier for you to find a more local person to assist you so feel free to contact via email.
