Hi Fellow Cyclists,
I hope this is of interest to all. Apologies in advance if it is not.

Please see message below re campaign to find Sth Aust’s Tour Down Under a more appropriate sponsor. First move is to convince TDU to ditch their current sponsor (till 2022), fossil fuel company Santos.

And for full disclosure, yes, I am a monthly financial supporter of 350.org.au to the tune of $20/month.

If you feel so inclined please forward to others who maybe interested. Thanks.

Regards
Fraser R

Hi Fraser,

My name is Robyn, and I am the convenor of our local chapter of 350 - Fossil Free South Australia, and I am thrilled to share our latest campaign with you.

Will you help us kick Santos out of South Australia’s Tour Down Under?

Fossil fuel companies are increasingly despised for their role in driving the climate crisis – that’s why oil & gas company Santos has tried to salvage its brand image over the last decade by sponsoring SA’s major cycling event the Tour Down Under.

We’re running a locally grown campaign to kick Santos off as the naming rights sponsor and we need your help. If thousands of us can call on Events SA to consider alternative sponsors to fossil fuel company Santos for the Tour Down Under, we can take our community event, and our democracy, back from the polluters.

Click to tell the organisers Events SA to kick Santos out of the Tour Down Under.

The Tour Down Under happens in January every year, it’s the start of the international cycling circuit, and puts a spotlight on our great state. In 2020, the route, and many stages, were disrupted by extreme heat (melting bitumen and delayed races) and the threat of bushfires looming over the state.

Fossil fuel companies like Santos, who are fuelling this climate crisis, should not be able to buy their community approval by slapping their logo on a high profile sporting event. We won’t stand for it, because we’re ready to #BreakAwayFromGas.

Community events, art galleries and sporting clubs across the world are deciding they won’t take dirty fossil fuel money, so there’s no reason Events SA can’t do the same.

Sign and share our petition and we’ll deliver it to them before the Tour next year.

We want to see the Tour Down Under continue with the support of clean corporate partners that are not linked to fossil fuel industries or the financial institutions that sustain them.

The renewable energy race is on. Across the world, states and nations are sprinting towards clean energy, leaving fossil fuels in their dust. Here in South Australia, we know exactly what that looks like - the other day we were powered 100% by solar power, and our old coal region has been transformed into a renewable energy hub.

Let’s showcase South Australia to the world as the clean, innovative state that it is. Together we can make sure our state’s biggest cycling event isn’t powered by money from dirty fossil fuels.

Thank you for your support,

Robyn, for the Fossil Free SA team and 350.org Australia 🚴🚴

We are building a grassroots movement to stand up to the fossil fuel industry, and support a just transition from coal, oil and gas to a renewable-energy future for all.

Keep 350 Australia strong by chipping in right now:

350 Australia acknowledges the Traditional Owners throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to the land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures; and to their Elders past, present and emerging. There can be no climate justice without justice for First Nations people across the globe.

A moot point now for 2021 it seems as media says TdU has been cancelled,

But relevant for 2022 and beyond and especially given the recent approval of the NSW "Environment" department of Santos' Narrabri Coal Seam Gas proposal despite "the department said about 98% of nearly 23,000 submissions it received on the proposal opposed the project. It said most argued the project would damage the region, affect biodiversity in the Pilliga forest and lead to substantial greenhouse gas emissions"

My old tourer (2008 Cannondale Touring 2, it has done a few 200km brevets as well) agrees, (pictured at the 10-10-2010 350.org Sydney rally), depressingly little progress on climate or active transport in 10 years!)
