I had a look through ACP’s records of PBP finishers recently.

There was an Australian Edmund Jones who finished PBP79, 83 and 87 but DNFed PBP91 and 95. I’d never heard of him but he is listed on the Willesden CC website as finishing PBP87 in their colours.

Barry Parslow rode his last of 5xPBP in 1987 as a Willesden member but he didn’t remember Edmund. It turns out that Ray Kelly (6xPBP and Willesden CC stalwart) did many brevets with Edmund Jones in the 1980s. Apparently Edmund was an Aussie who lived in the UK (west London) for decades and took to riding Moultons in later years. He died with Parkinson's some years ago.

By my reckoning, that makes Edmund the first Aussie to finish PBP Randonneur, after Oppy won the pro race in 1931 and ahead of the three Australians (David Bailey, Russell Moore, Stephen Poole) who travelled halfway round the world to finish PBP83. Audax UK itself was only formed in 1976, though the UK’s Barry Parslow rode his first PBP in 1966.

Only 3 years 1 month & 23 days until the 2023 PBP

Events have put me 6 months behind my planned preparation schedule but still time enough I hope

Stay well everyone

For various reasons I was looking at PBP results and looked up those for Edmund Jones

1979  87H54 291  JONES Edmund GB A.U.K.
1983  79H48 2018  JONES
Edmund GB A.U.K.
1987  83H35 4116  JONES Edmund GB WILLESDEN
1991  DNF 4689  JONES Edmund GB A.U.K.
1995  DNF 3164  JONES Edmund AU A.U.K.

From https://www.paris-brest-paris.org/index2.php?lang=en&cat=presentation&page=resultats_1995 and equivalent for 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991. The 79-91 have his nationality as UK and 1995 as AU.

With our 40th anniversary coming up in 2021 and not wishing to diminish the achievement of our three 1983 legends perhaps we should claim Edmund as an Aussie and add his 5 participations to our honour roll.
