Hi all

Due to pandemic Coronavirus and advice to limit the number of people meeting in groups,  including latest information from USA saying limit groups to 10,  is anyone involved in the OPPY management considering potential health risks  of a large gathering of mostly middle aged /elderly riders, many in the high risk category,  at the OPPY breakfast in Wodonga next Sunday? The current Australia suggestion of 500 is out of step with overseas countries.

Malaysia, the order includes a "comprehensive restriction on movements and public gatherings" including a ban on all religious, sports, social, and cultural activities, reported the state-run Bernama News Agency. All houses of worship and business premises will be closed, except for supermarkets, wet markets, grocery shops and convenience stores selling daily necessities.

France has banned all family and social gatherings and closed its borders.

The White House has advised people not to gather in groups of more than 10.

Riders would appreciate any clarification of the arrangements?

Regards

I'd have to agree, people that have just had their immune systems compromised on a long ride should not be getting together.

Are the breakfast venues allowing this to go ahead?

These gatherings may be banned before the weekend anyway.

Possibly Cycling NSW and Cycling Victoria has just cancelled all racing in both states until the end of April at this stage.

Cycling Australia are recommending cancelling all races and organised activities from 9am tomorrow (Wednesday) so I'm guessing we'll be hearing something from the FOADT organisers in due course.

cheers

Cycling Australia Statement Regarding Coronavirus, Racing And Training Activities

Members will be aware that measures have recently been introduced by the Federal and State and Territory governments to prohibit gatherings of 500 people or more.  This has already had an effect on a range of cycling activities across the country.

However, Cycling Australia wishes to take a more proactive approach in protecting the health and wellbeing of the riders and the families of our cycling community.  We believe this is the right course of action for cyclists to reduce the risk presented by the COVID-19 virus, and in particular to do our part to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19 infection rates.

As such, Cycling Australia strongly recommends that all club and other races around Australia are postponed as of 9.00am Wednesday 18 March 2020 and that this position is maintained until further notice.  Cycling Australia also recommends that organised club activities that involve close contact be suspended.

We encourage all members to remember the following behaviours to help maintain good hygiene:

  • Wash hands regularly with hand soap for more than 20 seconds and use fresh paper towels or air blowers to dry hands;
  • Use sanitising alcohol-based (at least 60% alcohol) hand rub in-between hand washing;
  • When coughing or sneezing, ensure that you do so into the fold of your elbow.
  • When using a tissue to blow your nose, dispose of the tissue immediately and refrain from placing tissues back into pockets or bags;
  • Maintain a safe buffer distance between (1.5 m suggested) to minimise transmission and provide reassurance to others by respecting their space;
  • Avoid touching your face with your hands; and
  • Do not touch surfaces that may be at risk of being contaminated.
  • Please note these recommendations may be updated frequently over the coming weeks and months, and we encourage people to keep abreast of these expert recommendations - click HERE to access the link.

If you decide that your event or club activity should proceed then Cycling Australia recommends that the following restrictions should apply:

  • If riding two abreast, keep the maximum allowable gap of 1.5 metres between riders and a gap of at least 1.5m to the rider in front of you, including while stopped at intersections
  • Limiting groups or bunches to 10 or fewer riders
  • Ensuring all riders are self-sufficient in case of mechanical issues
  • At cafes, maintain appropriate social distancing and keep helmets, gloves and sunglasses away from tables

The virus and potential implications are changing constantly, will be monitored and acted upon accordingly, and we will keep you updated as new information comes to hand.

We are keen to restore racing and riding activity, particularly given the positive physical and mental health benefits provided by cycling during these challenging times.  However, we are taking a cautious approach and considering how and when this can occur. In particular, we want to ensure we are considering our whole community and particularly those most at risk.
