Kia ora Glen,

Hope you are doing well.

Hey, I need guidance to install Linux in my MacPro. It is a 2011 release which is in great condition however is not supported by Apple any more, slowly turning into junk, it can not open sites as their platforms get upgraded.

I decided to give up OS and install Linux to be able to continue using the device.

I have never used Linux before, it has been ages (15+ years) since I installed a software into the comp :) I am not a tech person. So I was wondering if there is a service or support group I can ask for help?

I am happy to consider paying a reasonable amount if there is a professional service available, or do it myself with the help of someone present who can guide in case I get stuck.

Looking forward to hearing from you with advice/tips.

Many thanks and regards,

Vafa

PS. I live in Auckland.

Hi Vafa,

I've done a bit of work on that recently with varying success.
Happy to help but have limited capacity, ie. can help after you
(re)search the basics yourself.
It's a shame that perfectly fine hardware is made obsolete (and thus
goes to "recycling": very inefficient way to reclaim a few small bits of
material) by one of the richest companies on the planet. But that's a
topic for another day.
I've got a number of iMacs and am currently fighting with the hardware
accelerated drivers for those.
It would be great if some of us could work together to get Linux working
on those old machines to give them a 2nd life.

Elementary OS has come a long way as a feasible replacement OS for those
who are used to the Apple way of doing things.

cheers,
Jan

Hi,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTeam/CommunityHelpPages

This could be a good start point if you want to install a Ubuntu on
your Macbook Pro. Personally, I have a Macbook Pro 2015 which is
running Ubuntu since 2015. Initially I installed Ubuntu 14.04 and now
upgraded to 20.04. The only thing that doesn't work well is the
camera. But I don't use it too much.

Hope this helps.

Trying Ubuntu is a very good idea.
I have been using UBUNTU almost from 2008 in fairly old pcs and now Ubuntu 20.04 .
That is again in few years old computers
Installing it in MacBook cannot be difficult.
There is lot of helpful information on the web.
Regards.
