Hey folks,

here are some details for the upcoming handball tournament in Palmerston North which will take place on Saturday, 17th September 2011.
It's certainly one of the best tournaments in NZ (apart form the Auckland one of course ;-) ) where exciting matches and many teams are expected.
Of course we have to form a team that will represent Auckland Handball in the tournament. Since we have won the tournament last year, it will be our duty to defend the cup, this year! :-)

Three things have to be confirmed ASAP for this tournament:

1. Who can make it?

2. Accommodation

3. Transportation

1. If you want to come to the tournament, send me an E-Mail ASAP with your confirmation. If you are interested in the tournament generally, but you are not too sure at this point, please send me an E-Mail saying that you are "coming maybe", rather than keeping quiet, that makes it easier to get an overview.

Since the tournament takes place at Saturday and starts early in the morning, the common procedure is that we will travel there at Friday and return to Auckland on Sunday. Of course this is totally up to you when and how you are coming to Palmerston North, but the standard case is to assume everybody needing accommodation for two nights. Please note this explicitly, if your plans differ from this assumption.

2. Anna has already taken care of the accommodation, which will be 55 dollars for two nights. If you already know that you are coming, please be as kind and give her the money on Thursday before the next game, because she has to put a deposit for the rooms!

3. The most complex topic usually is transportation. Some people want to come by car and accept an 8 hours journey each way and some won't deal with that and take a plane instead. Of course, car and bus are the cheaper options but time is money as we know.

Transportation has to be organized by everybody themselves, we won't do it for you, but at least I can offer you a little overview about the possibilities:

a. Bus: Intercity.co.nz has daily offers from Auckland to Palmerston North. The Bus takes around 9 hours and costs between 32$Q and 36$ each way. Unfortunately the timetables are not really that great, because it only goes in the morning and the evening. Maybe there are some hard workers that want to travel overnight...

Friday:
07:45 AM - 04:46 PM
09:00 AM - 06:50 PM
09:15 AM - 07:05 PM
08:40 AM - 07:05 PM
07:50 PM - 04:44 AM

Sunday:
09:20 AM - 07:00 PM
09:55 PM - 06:50 AM

b. Airplane:
Air NewZealand is operating between Auckland and Palmerston North. A flight takes around 1 hour and therefore is much more pleasureable than a tedious bus or car ride.

At this point (22nd of August) the prices for a flight are the following:

Auckland - Palmerston North:

AirNz Smart Saver: 145$

Palmerston North - Auckland:
AirNz Smart Saver: 145$

This can change all the time and if you are lucky even some grab a seat offers are popping up. But bear in mind, the longer you wait the less seats are available. This could lead to the situation that you can only get the expensive Flexi Plus 217$ seats, money you could use Saturday night much better.

c. Last but not least: The good old shared car ride. What could be more fun than squeezing 3 to 4 of your team mates into your little japanese city car for a nice 6 to 8 hour (more 8 than 6 to be fair) joy ride through New Zealands wonderful landscapes? It is certainly the cheapest options and although it might not be the most comfortable way to travel, the relief you will feel once you arrive in Palmerston is absolutely incredible. :-)
Besides, we need some cars down there anyway.

Something we could consider if enough people are interested: Hiring a minivan. Those cost about 60 dollars + fuel now a days and with a full bus, there should be no cheaper option to travel. If you think this might be a good idea, let me know and we see what we can do.

Important: Please note in your e-mail how and when you are going to travel to Palmerston North if possible. If you have a car and/or are willing to drive please mention this too.

Alright people, the tournament will take place very soon, so please reply as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael,

I am going, unless I have a business emergency and have to go back to China or something before then.

I could take my car, and leave Friday afternoon sometime.

I'll bring money for Anna on Thursday.
