Decorations for Jukai
This Thursday evening, zazen will finish a little early to give us time to do some decorating in preparation for Jukai. Dokusan will be offered as usual.
Matariki Jukai
This Sunday evening, 29 June, our mid-winter Jukai (Receiving-the-Precepts) Ceremony will be held at the Centre. Matariki is a time of renewal, and this ceremony is a renewal of one’s commitment to the Buddha Way. Note: this sitting and ceremony replaces our usual Sunday morning programme.
The Zendo will be open for informal zazen from 4 p.m. Sitting before Jukai makes for a richer experience.
The ceremony will start at 5:30 p.m. with chanting and offerings to Sensei (these are to her personally, not to the Centre), followed by recitation of this verse:
All evil actions committed by me since time immemorial,
stemming from greed, anger and delusion,
arising from body, speech and mind,
I now repent having committed.
After the verse, we take the Sixteen Precepts: the Three Treasures, the Three General Resolutions and the Ten Cardinal Precepts. For the full text of the precepts see this page.
Following the Ceremony there will be a Chinese vegetarian mid-winter feast at De One Restaurant, 56 Broadway, Newmarket, to which partners and spouses are warmly invited. Please make your reservations for the meal online (see below for link). The money for the meal, $25 a head, will be collected on the night.
