See the letter below from Amitabha Hospice, which is again offering a stage one course in Buddhist chaplaincy in conjunction with the New Zealand Buddhist Council. Two more stages will be offered in future years to participants who complete a required amount of supervised hours working with patients.

Dear Buddhist Friends,

The New Zealand Buddhist Council and Amitabha Hospice will be offering a weekend course to train Buddhist students / practitioners of any lineage and tradition to become Apprentice Buddhist Chaplains. This will be a Level 1 Course to serve as an Apprentice Buddhist Chaplains within the NZ health care system. 

Before acceptance in this course all applicants will be police checked and interviewed, either in person or by skype (if out of Auckland) by a representative of their particular tradition and a facilitator. 

The course will held on Friday 5, Sat 6 & Sun 7 Sept from 9:00 am to 4pm at Amitabha Hospice in Auckland.

There will be a small charge of $150 to cover the costs.

There will be presenters from different Buddhist traditions to explain their values and practices. The facilitators of the course will be:

·       Ecie Hursthouse (RN) Managing Director of Amitabha Hospice, Vice President of the NZ Buddhist Council, Co-founder of Peaceful Passing and accredited NZ Buddhist Chaplain.

·       Kala Dostal, Spiritual Program Coordinator of Chandrakirti Meditation Centre, Co-founder of Peaceful Passing, NZ National Facilitator for the 16 Guidelines for Life and accredited NZ Buddhist Chaplain.

 

Some of the material that will be covered during this course will be:

·       A brief history of Buddhist Chaplaincy in the world

·       Overview of different Buddhist traditions

·       The culture of care and dying from a medical view - how physical health problems affect people and their spiritual needs

·       Building pastoral identity, as participants reflect on their own spiritual journey, while accompanying others on theirs

·       Developing one's ability to assess patient's specific concerns arising from different cultural, spiritual, socioeconomic and psychological backgrounds

·       Compassionate communication

·       Education and training relevant to counselling, listening skills and Buddhism (including tradition or lineage and years of practice)
