Sewing 101 & Fiber/Fabric Friday 5/24

Taking advantage of the fact that our new space has plenty of, well, space - I'm hoping it's okay to have 2 things going on at once.  I'd thought I'd picked a Friday that didn't have awesome fabricator-ness going on - but managed to mess that up!  Ah well!  Normally I'd just move things around, but that really is the best day for this event for me (enough time to get the word out and prep for the class, and a Friday I've got free.)  

All that to say - Friday, May 24th will be the first of what will hopefully be a monthly class & gathering for those of us interested in sewing and creating things with fabric and fibers.  I'll be teaching a Sewing 101 class, which I hope people will sign up for so I can have materials prepped in advance.  Cost for the class is $3 for materials.  You will make a cool thing - I'm still figuring out what that thing will be, but right now am leaning towards a re-useable shopping bag, since we all need more of those!  

So come on out and play with fabric!

The two events sound completely complementary to me. However, if Martin is planning on hosting Fabricator Friday, I will have to remind him that he'll be out of town!

I have a simple pattern for a bomber-style hat that makes a good beginner project. I can track that down if there's interest. (I made one out of old blue jeans - it turned out all right for a first sewing project)

Thanks for the reminder, Evelyn!  I've e-mailed Chad at the contact address listed on the Contact Us page.  

Class will be capped at 10 people.

There are really 2 kinds of classes to teach here - I can either teach how to sew from a pattern, or how to sew from an online tutorial.  I feel like sewing from a pattern is a skill that it is useful to have, and that's harder to come by.  We're all pretty clever, so the online tutorial focus would really be more about how to use a sewing machine.  Anybody have opinions as to which I should go with?  

If I'm going to do the pattern, I should really go to JoAnn's soon (there's a 5 for $5 sale on Simplicity patterns right now, if you're going to sew off a pattern, you need to have your own pattern.)

Wow, that was a good deal 5 for $5...I bought one.  It might be beyond my skill but I'm willing to learn. 

I also have a project that I've been doing by hand I'll bring that with me.  Totally homemade. ;p

When you mean sewing, it's that using a sewing machine or doing it by hand?  Can't wait to learn :D

My intent is to teach the basics of using a sewing machine.  If we have time, I'll go over patterns and the like.  We'll just see how it goes!  I've got an easy Vintage Pillowcase to Reuseable Shopping Bag project for anyone who doesn't have something that they're already working on, but if you've got the materials for something else, bring 'em!
