Hey everyone,

I'm working on a pan/tilt mechanism for RT with my friend Rick, and I want to follow these instructions to control my Dynamixel servos via an Arduino.

It looks like the piece of hardware that I need and don't have is a tri-state buffer.

Do we have any tri-state buffers in the electronic components bin of the space?  Is this something I could get from Frys or Radio Shack.

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to electronics.  I follow online tutorials like how someone who doesn't know how to cook follows a recipe book.

But I'm open to advice.  I'd rather this part locally vs online so if you can tell me of a store that would have it, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Luke

Luke,
It looks like they are using a 74LS241. You can probably find one at Radio Shack or Frys.

a tri-state buffer passes a high/low signal or effectively disconnects the data line

if Fry's/RS don't carry the 241 I have a few dozen 125 which do the same thing

If they don't have 'em give me a call, I live a few blocks from there.

Last time I checked we had some 240s and no 241s or 244s in te plastic bin. The 244 would be the most common one usually, and it differs from the 241 in that the second half of 241 has an active high gate G2 instead of the 244s more typical active low gate !G2. The 240s invert the outputs.

There are plastic tubes of chips in a big plastic bin on a shelf near electronics. the 74s should be bundled with rubber bands in ranges. There is a cardboard bin with individually labeled tubes, you can check those too.
