Here is the planer we have agreed on:
Powermatic 20" Helical Head 5HP 230V
Here is the link:

https://www.woodcraft.com/products/powermatic-209hh-20-planer-5hp-1ph-230v-with-byrd-cutterhead
Woodcraft has the best price. Everywhere else is $400-500 more. With the
correct upkeep, this machine will last years longer than any other brand
comparable in price, specs and dimensions.

The one that we currently have does not consistently work and at most times
doesn't work properly. Be aware, that the new planer can only move the bed
up and down instead of the head so we will have to navigate a new place for
the machine since we will no longer use the currently out-feed setup. But
don't worry, we have our best people on it.

We have done the research and found that no planer, except for one, wider
than 13" can move the head up and down to be able to keep our same out-feed
setup.  That machine will require us to remove the existing head and
replace it with a helical head. That task would take too much time,
research and also would be incredibly in-superior to our Powermatic option
we have requested. It would also require someone to do it and ain't nobody
got time for that.    Thanks!

Please discuss this with the workshop group at work...@atxhs.org :

https://groups.google.com/a/atxhs.org/forum/#!topic/workshop/cINOatlljSE

The Powermatic 20" 209HH is a strong option.  However the specific part number you list is not matched to our facility power.

We run 208v 3ph, this is the 3ph variant that works with bldg power, otherwise the same thing (209hh 5hp 20" etc):

https://www.woodcraft.com/products/powermatic-209hh-20-planer-5hp-3ph-230-460v-with-byrd-cutterhead

As you say, this will not fit our current shop arrangement.  Please bring up plans for changes with the workshop group

Thanks!

I think the stage we're at right now with this is that the workshop group, which includes Jason, is putting together a proposal. The person who often helps with readying proposals is Dan, but he is out of town and not checking messages.
I can share what an earlier proposal that worked well looked like if this would help. I will also be at the space tomorrow night if anybody wants to work on formatting and pulling together the proposal.
Thank you for working on this,
Kye

There has been some unexpected legal fees and back logged finance stuff that the board has had to take care of,  So the new planer is in a holding pattern for now. Probably 1-2 months until we could get it.

Joe does have a fixed blade Dewalt planer , that we can probably use in the interim( need to ask him) and if you guys want to help we can true the helical head on the broken one and install it on joes straight blade.

I would have serious concerns with bending back the shaft of the helical head. It takes an awful lot of stress and if it's a little off it will seize up the bearings.

With the abuse the planer or other tools are given here it would only be a matter of time till the planer would begin to fail.

From the board perspective: We believe that the vote would go through for a new planer. We also each individually and as a group believe it is an important purchase, and want it.

However, we need to make sure that everyone would be voting with the right information on finances.

First, we need an updated finance report from Rob, which includes payments made for the Rong Fu mill, $5000 to reimburse Danny for a retainer he put down for the lawyer, and payments made and which we anticipate making toward the Tormach.

Two, I'm also meeting with our lawyer in person tomorrow and need to understand more about how much we can expect to spend on her services. More information on that forthcoming, she's helping me to put together an email for the list.
Thank you,
Kye

I have been thinking about the planer proposal. We don't really need a wide planer. We need a very heavy duty planer that can handle the duty cycle that we require. Most boards aren't wider than 12". I think a 15" planer is more reasonable and slightly easier to find in brick and mortar and no traditional means.
