I have an electric motor that I need to extend the shaft on by about an inch or two. It's a 10mm shaft. It's a high enough torque application that I can't use one of the cnc flexible shaft extenders. I was going to pick up one of these 10mm clamping shaft collar: amazon.com, but I don't have any 10mm stock laying around to use for the other end.

Anyone have any advice or a spare 2" piece of 10mm stock I can have/trade/buy off them?

Thanks,

Robf

How long is the original shaft?  Does it make sense to mill a new (replacement) shaft to the correct length?

1 3/16" sticking outside of the gearbox. I haven't disassembled the gearbox to look at how that's all hooked up. I may tear it apart this week though to see what kind of work that would take.

Robert

Just curious if it's low or high RPM.  Generally a small coupling from a supplier like R&W or LoveJoy would be a preferred solution.  Shaft alignment is pretty important and a clamp may introduce some mechanical problems that will show up later.  Depends on how much run time, vibration, etc.  If the on-time is low and RPM is low you can use a clamp.

Just being cautious, I have done quite a bit of motion control over the years.

It's part of a meat grinder I'm working on. The RPMs are less than 200, but the torque is high. Runtime is typically less than an hour at a time. I don't think shaft alignment will be that big a deal.

What's the difference between a clamp and a coupler? All the couplers I've seen have been basically clamps, but with notches to assist with small changes in alignment.

I think you're looking for a shaft extender. The SDP/SI guys have a 10mm version. Go to https://sdp-si.com/eStore/Catalog/Group/373# and search for S52FCYM100100.

Couplings come in a bunch of different styles but mainly they take up mis-alignment and most of them add a little bit of compliance to the rotation.  It's a specialty product niche in mechanical stuff for motion control

Given the requirement, it doesn't look like a big deal.  Jamie Carrera's selection looks like the best bet.
