This is a commercially available Hydrogen PEM fuel cell kit from a
company that makes everything from RC car power cells to huge multi-KW
fuel cell stacks.

Pretty cool. Makes me feel like I live in the 21st century.

That's pretty neat!

But what does a fuel cell control shield do? Something like a fuel
injection computer?

It controls the solenoids and the voltages going to the hydrogen
storage canister.

The hydrogen is "locked up" in a metal hydrate, which requires (very)
little voltage to release it's hydrogen cargo. So, the shield
controls both the solenoid valve (to the PEM) and the storage cell.

This kit is way overpriced. I guess a prize for being the first group to put it all together.

You can buy custom made canisters up to two or three times that size for 600. Smaller size in this instance should not increase price.

They sell the H2 canisters for $15 each on the site.  I'm not sure what part of this kit makes it so expensive, it doesn't even include a way to fill the canister for that price.

With an adapter you can just hook it up at room temp to a hydrogen source and it will suck it up, if I recall correctly. You can warm the metal to speed up the process in both directions, too.

IIRC there's a problem with at least some fuel cells that they require really high purity H2.  Contaminants may damage the cell, and the cell's pretty darn expensive.

Praxair, though, started carrying fuel-cell-grade H2:

I imagine the gas filling process has to be pretty controlled to avoid introducing contaminants that way.
