I have a friend working on a project where she wants the piece to make noise as people approach, and decrease/stop as they walk away.  I think I can find the components and plans, but if anyone has attempted this before I would appreciate any advice (lessons learned) before I get to the programming/soldering phase.

Well there is a difference between sensing someone is
present and turning on, and sensing how far they
are away and mapping that on to a volume curve.

Is depth perception a requirement?

Not a requirement, but I'd like to make it a feature.

Also, there are many different kinds of noise.

What sort of noise are we talking about? Synthesized, sampled, natural? Brown, Pink, white?

I have a parallax ultrasonic rangefinder that is really easy to use
with an arduino. I made a quick sketch with it that pulsed an led
brighter as you walked closer to it.
