Join us for the monthly CenTex Mapathon to contribute to an
OpenStreetMap project or recruit someone for your own. This event occurs
every last Sunday of the month.
Topic:
OpenStreetMap or recruit people for your own project.
OpenStreetMap
is an opensource community using aerial imagery. Our topic for the
month will be based on need. We will evaluate what is needed in the
community prior to the event.
OpenStreetMap is built by a
community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads,
trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.
Local
Knowledge - OpenStreetMap emphasizes local knowledge. Contributors use
aerial imagery, GPS devices, and low-tech field maps to verify that OSM
is accurate and up to date.
Community Driven - OpenStreetMap's
community is diverse, passionate, and growing every day. Our
contributors include enthusiast mappers, GIS professionals, engineers
running the OSM servers, humanitarians mapping disaster-affected areas,
and many more.
Open Data - OpenStreetMap is open data: you are
free to use it for any purpose as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and
its contributors. If you alter or build upon the data in certain ways,
you may distribute the result only under the same license.
What to do before the event:
Register for slack #disaster channel:
https://slack.hotosm.org (takes about a day to process)
What to expect:
Introductions will be made from the respective representative for each project.
Open Street Map Project
After
getting you connected to the OpenStreetMap community, if you don't
already have an account, we will work on examples together. Volunteers
will be available for assistance.
If you are a GISCorps volunteer
and a HOTOSM contributor, please remember to add #GISCorps to your
changeset comment when you save your edits and don't forget to keep
track of the hours you spend mapping. When you're finished, fill out
this Google form (
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSemWARzIJaW8Tz0fjFB7Zr1tYPalJxkph8ysLuQ8puQE2Y6iQ/viewform)
so we can accurately track and report GISCorps volunteer contributions
to HOTOSM projects. You'll also receive documentation of your
contribution, which can be used for GISP credit.
Laptops are available but bringing your own laptop is recommended.
Please note:
If you would like to recruit people for your own project, please contact us so we can get you on the list.
