Applying to become a GISCorps volunteer can only be done on line, via our link: Sign Up To Volunteer. Once you have accepted our Code of Conduct and our General Policies and you have completed the skills form, you should receive an automated confirmation email. We do not vet volunteers upon sign up, anyone with GIS skills can join. You will then start receiving our quarterly newsletter, periodic announcements, and if and when your skills match a recruitment, you will get an email notification about the project.

GISCorps doesnot guarantee an assignment to everyone that applies to become a GISCorps volunteer. As new projects become available, our role is to supply the best qualified candidates for the task at hand. If your qualifications match the skills needed and you are interestedand available for the duration of the project, you may apply as a candidate. We then interview applicants and pass the top candidates to the requesting agency. Some postings are very competitive. Once a volunteer is ultimately paired with the partner agency, GISCorps responsibilities are minimal, and volunteers will be in direct communication with the host agency. For rights, privileges, and privacy issues refer to our General Policies.

Repost from GIS Corps Newsletter:

HOTOSM Projects
We're pleased to announce that we have added a Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team page to our website! On that page you'll find links to the most current projects for which HOT has requested GISCorps volunteer support, as well as links to HOT resources for volunteers just getting started as HOT editors or validators.

GISCorps volunteers continue to contribute their skills to Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team projects around the globe. Top priorities continue to be tasks related to Cyclone Gaja and the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Work on areas affected by flooding in Kerala, India, and southwestern Japan continues as well. Cumulatively at least 41 volunteers have contributed over 310 hours digitizing and validating 11 different projects, and efforts are ongoing.

If you are a GISCorps volunteer and a HOTOSM contributor, please remember to add #GISCorps to your changeset comment when you save your edits and don't forget to keep track of the hours you spend mapping. When you're finished, fill out this Google form so we can accurately track and report GISCorps volunteer contributions to HOTOSM projects. You'll also receive documentation of your contribution, which can be used for GISP credit.
