Local Projects

The Texas Justice Initiative(http://texasjusticeinitiative.org/about/) provides the public with data on aspects of the Texas criminal justice system. Our data portal is built using public information that is otherwise not digestible or accessible, and TJI seeks to be a resource to journalists, researchers, policymakers, advocates and the general public. A nonprofit organization, TJI operates on a lean budget and relies on volunteers.

Project basics:
TJI currently has three datasets served on their website that are updated monthly. They are interested in geo-enabling the datasets and providing basic interactive mapping and search functionalities through their website. In the interest of transparency, they would like an open source, free or low-cost solution, which can be automated to consume the monthly updates.

Required Qualifications:
Experience with open source mapping tools (such as QGIS, Carto and Google Maps)
Strong understanding of core web development technologies (HTML/CSS/JS)
Proficiency and experience presenting geographical data on web sites and relevant javascript libraries (e.g. Leaflet, MapBox)
Experience with data analysis in a major language like R or Python a plus
Ability to work with a team to craft creative open source solutions
Excellent written and verbal communication
Experience documenting workflows
Experience with GDocs, Slack and GitHub
Interest in social justice issues

Duration: Initially, the volunteer must be able to commit 8-10 hours per week for approximately 3-6 months with weekly check-in meetings on Sundays. There is the potential for longer involvement on additional projects depending on the chosen volunteer's skills, availability, and interest.

Software: Volunteers will work with their own hardware and software. The volunteer will be responsible for suggesting the most appropriate free/low-cost open source software solution for the task at hand.

Location:  The ideal volunteer will live in proximity to Austin, TX, and be available for weekly meetings on Sundays throughout the duration of the project.

If you are interested and available, please send a brief email (with the subject line: TJI volunteer position) detailing your skills and interest along with your current resume to: rec...@giscorps.org by March 1, 2019. Qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews after that time.

For more local projects, join the Open Austin Slack Channel.

See you at another mapathon!

Thanks,

Janny
