I am having trouble running my Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 on my new laptop. When I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 I was running it on Windows Vista Home Premium, but have since upgraded to Windows 10. I installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 on my new laptop and have had nothing but trouble. I was at first able to run the program and access my Catalogue through running the Trouble Shooter and selecting Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (or 3). However, since yesterday I can no longer access my program. If I try to open the Edit and Enhance Photos feature, the program freezes up on launch (where it says reading preferences) and does not open. If I try to open View and Organize Photos, the program also freezes and says that it failed to launch the Catalogue. Several people told me to uninstall the Adobe program from my computer and re-install it. However, after having done so I am still having the same problems. Can you provide me with more assistance? At this time I have uninstalled Adobe from my computer again and am waiting to do a fresh install with some guidance.

I was hoping there might be a work-around to getting the program to work. Strangely, my friend is able to run theirs on Windows 10 without problems. Open Notepad, paste the code, save as "PSLaunch.bat" instead of a ".txt", and if you want to make life extra easy, redirect your photoshop shortcut to the file. Please note, that this assumes you used the default install directory, if you installed it elsewhere, you will need to change the directory.
This code deletes the preferences file which seems to be the issue on Win 10 (and unfortuanately where all the settings are saved, so every launch the settings will be reset) and allows it to properly launch on Windows 10. Kind of a crappy work around but it works every time as of Win 10 20H2
I've run it on Windows 10 since Win10 was released, and for the first few years it gave me no issues. However, on more recent updates (19XX/20XX builds), even with a fresh install of windows, it will randomly either work or get hung during launch. The bat file just helps to garentee that PSE5 launches consistantly.
I have the Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5 on CD from when I purchased it back in 2010. I just bought a new laptop and want to put these programs on the new laptop. I downloaded Illustrator fine from the CD, took about five minutes. I tried downloading Photoshop with the CD and I keep getting a runtime error (screenshot below).
I obviously tried restarting which didn't work, I've tried running the setup in compatability mode for Windows 7 because my old laptop was Windows 7 and it worked fine, that didn't work either. I tried going onto my Adobe account and downloading the software from my products page to see if that would work better than the CD, that gave me the same runtime error message.
I don't know what could be causing this issue with photoshop when there was no issue with Illustrator. I think it might just be that Windows 11 is still working out some kinks as it's still only a couple of months old, but I don't know if there are any other suggestions from anybody here that might be able to help.
I've actually already posted in a Microsoft fourm as well but unfortunately Ii haven't had any luck with the few suggestionns I've gotten there, I thought maybe someone in the Adobe community may have more specific experience with this issue with the software. I just tried what you suggested and had high hopes! Unfortunately I'm still getting the same error after installing the updated C++ runtime
To be perfectly honest, I don't think this will ever work well for you. CS5 is obsolete software from almost 12 years ago and definitely NOT certified to run on Win 11 systems. Only the latest Creative Cloud apps from 2022 have been equipped to work on the latest Win & Mac operating systems. And even then there are some known issues.
I have been running Illustrator CS5 on Windows 11 perfectly fine. I already paid hundreds of dollars for this software and even if it was years ago, I don't want to have to shell out a subscription fee each month when I already have the programs that I need. I'd love to be able to upgrade, but as a small business owner, every dollar counts and I can't justify the monthly expense.
Obviously the poster also uses Illustrator, which is only included in a much more expensive plan. I have a new PC with Windows 10 installed. Microsoft wants me to upgrade to 11 so I was here seeing if people are having problems with these older programs on the new platform. I will stay with windows 10 for now until I can be assured the new version won't mess up the LR 6 and CS5.5 programs that do everything that I need them to do. Would I like to upgrade, sure, but I also really dislike the rental business model so I won't. In fact I have been looking at other single purchase options. If I didn't rely on the cataloging features of LR or use InDesign so much I would have already switched to ON1 PhotoRAW.
I installed CS5 on my WIN 11 Laptop today and had no problems at all. First: Use the 64bit-Version only; second: Skip the restart question. It took about 15 minutes for the whole installation process.
I too need to know if Photoshop CS5 will work on Win11 and it looks like I'm going to find out real soon since I am building a new computer. But the software was intended for computers at the time it came out. As computers advance it's only a matter of time until they're not going to make computers just so someone can use their old software. That all said, I'm not for computer manufacturers who make computers differently just so people can't use their old software and now have to pay a monthly fee. My CS5 did work fine on my Win10 computer so you should be good to go for a long time.
Two ideas that MAY work to install and/or run old programs in Windows 10 (and MAYBE Windows 11 ?)

So, I have been able to install Adobe CS5 Master collection on my new Microsoft Surface Pro 8 running Window 11. It ran fine for a few days then completely prevents my system from booting up at all. I thought the new tablet PC was broken after the second time I had to recover and reinstall the OS. However, the second time I did NOT install the Adobe software, and the system ran fine for a couple of months. I had a project that came up and I needed to work away from my win 10 desktop at home so I reinstalled the CS5 software on my Surface Pro, and it stopped booting up and I had to recover the OS and lose everything THE VERY NEXT DAY. It is very frustrating that the response to these issues from Adobe is to require us to pay $60 a month to use software we already own. Things are tight for everyone right now and getting tighter. The CS5 Master Collection was THOUSANDS of dollars when it launched. For that kind of money they should not discontinue support for the software. Saying oh well, you just need to keep paying us more money, forever, is pretty a terrible practice for any company that cares about thier customers.
CS5 is old and obsolete. If you need to use it, run it on a Windows 7 computer. This is the SAME argument we see over and over- you made a huge change (operating system upgrade, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows 11) and are surprised that older software quits working. Well, don't be surprised.
CS5 works fine on Windows 10. For many of us, we would rather stick with 10 and know our software (that does everything we need it to do) will continue to function, but are considering upgrades to 11, which is why the fact that the OP is having issues is concerning. If you had read the whole thread you would also know that some users have been able to get the older software to work with Windows 11, so obviously there is some work around for those who need to do it. The issue is most likely with the specific way the Surface Pro version of Windows 11 is set up. I had issues installing on my Fujitsu Windows 10 computer years ago, but eventually found the drivers that needed changed (it was a long time ago so don't ask me what the changes were) to make it work. I had no issues when I installed on my homemade desktop, and the transfer to my new laptop was seemless. The question here is what is different on the Windows 11 install and how to over come it. Yes, expecting Adobe to trouble shoot 12 year old software is a bit much, but support from Microsoft on their brand new project should be expected, as they have all but guarnateed compatibility in their advertising. Luckily we have an internet full of people who have done the same thing and made it work to help find the answers. If you find one then please feel free to comment.
Actually it doesn't "work fine." I have CS5 installed on a Windows 10 box at work and it mostly works, but is completely unsupported. And no, its not up to Microsoft. In fact, this is one of the biggest technical problems with Windows, user demands that old software keep working. Apple has done the smart thing and dropped support for older apps.
then maybe you don't have it configured correctly. I have no issues on the two commputers where I currently have the entire suite installed (except dreamworks which I didn't use so deleted-Word press is so much easier) with the Windows 10 operating system. I used it for years on my previous windows 10 laptop with no issues once it was set up correctly. Adobe even made the license transfer easy with my outdated product - just took a few minutes on Chat to get it switched to my new laptop now that it is no longer tracked online through my account.
