Nowyou are at the most important step, renunciation of Malaysia Citizenship. I guess this is the step that worries most people. At least that was how I felt. No worries, today you are lucky because I am going to show you step by step to submit your renunciation application. ?
Due to covid-19 pandemic, visiting the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore is strictly by appointment only. You can make your appointment via email to the consular section at
cons...@mhc.org.sg . Remember to attach the approval letter to show that you are at the final stage of Singapore Citizenship application.
A piece of advice here, you should make your appointment as soon as you complete the Singapore Citizenship Journey stage. This is to avoid any crashing to your scheduled appointment date to ICA for citizenship registration. I was caught into this date crashing situation. ?
For my case, I sent an email to the Consular section to make an appointment on 22 July 2020 and I got the reply on the same day. However, the appointment date I got is on 28 August 2020, which is way behind my appointment date to report to ICA, on 17 August 2020.
Without further delay, I quickly wrote an email to ICA (
ICA_Citize...@ica.gov.sg) to request an extension to my appointment. Luckily, I received the reply from ICA (three days later) that my appointment is rescheduled to 07 September 2020. It was really a big relief to me when I saw that email! ?
When the High Commission of Malaysia replies to your appointment date, there should be a checklist attached together for the required documents. Alternatively, you may visit the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore website for the required documents list.
When you are at the entrance of the Malaysia High Commission, proceed to the security hut to exchange your entry pass by showing your appointment email to the security guard. Then you can proceed to the consular section. In the consular area, you should see an officer sitting next to the queue ticket machine. Tell the officer that you are here to renounce your citizenship and he will give you 2 forms, Borang-K and MY-RN1.
Fill out the forms carefully with black ink pen. Once completed, hand back the forms to the officer for verification. If you do everything correctly, the officer will give you the yellow colour original Borang-K. Fill out the same information as you did earlier. Remember to use a black ink pen.
Once again, hand back the completed yellow Borang-K back to the officer for verification. If you have done it correctly, the officer will ask you for all the required documents and clip them together for submission. Lastly, the officer will issue you a queue ticket. Sit back and wait for your number to be called.
Proceed to the counter when your number is called and submit all the required documents. Then sit back again to wait for your number to make payment. The payment amount is S$10. Make sure you prepare the exact amount in cash. They only accept cash and no change.
I collected my MY-RN1 form on 01 September 2020. The process is fast, within 15 minutes. Keep the form properly because you will need it for the registration of Singapore Citizenship at ICA. As for the Borang-K, the approval process takes about 8 months time. You will receive a letter from the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore when it is ready for collection.
Hi CH, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I lost my original birth certificate but have photocopies of it. Do you think I will encounter issue when submitting my renunciation of Malaysian citizenship? My ICA appointment is scheduled on 26 Aug and the lost of BC is really bothering me.
Thank you so much. This info helps me a lot, as I am in the process of getting an appointment from Malaysia High Comm to do renunciation. Should I settle my Malaysia bank saving account, EPF etc before completion of my renunciation?
In my opinion, you should keep your Malaysia saving account. It will come very handy when you need to transfer fund to your family members or make payment for your bill incurred in Malaysia. It is not easy for a foreigner to open a bank account in Malaysia.
Hi
Before renunciation at Malaysia Hicomm, can we still using Malaysia passport go back Malaysia now? Since the border had opened few months I hv not back to home country. And I have not book any appointments at hicomm
Hi Michelle,
When you make an appointment to the MHC, you need to attach your final approval letter from ICA to prove that you are at the final stage. Perhaps, you might give it a try to see if they accept in-principal approval letter. However, you should NEVER renounce your citizenship until received the final approval from ICA.
Hi Vivian,
Thank you for stopping by my blog. I am glad that it is useful to you. ?
It is good that you have sent an email to ICA to change your appointment date. I think you should receive a reply within a week. By the way, what is your original appointment date with ICA? For urgent matter, you may also call ICA for advice.
Wish you and family a great Tiger year!
Your blog has helped me a lot, and i believe a lot of other Msians who turning into SG citizen. I just want to update you with my situation so that you may continue to share and help other Msians who are getting the SG citizenship.
**Also for baby below 1 year old (i am not sure exact cut off of age, so i assumed) as my case, the baby does not need to be present at ICA during the registration, and i have gotten her certificate of the citizenship on the very same day.
Hi Gary,
For Hong, she called ICA to explain her situation before heading down for registration. I think you should do that too. Please call ICA to explain your situation before heading for your registration.
Glad to see your post and I m surprised to find the comments from Hong as I m having the same situation right now. I informed ica my appointment for embassy is in May where the ica dates are not open yet for citizenship registration. To my surprise, ica informed me to register before renouncing which is really a bonus to me! Since more VTL tickets are open now , I actually have question to Hong if he successfully travel back to Malaysia with SG passport before renouncing?
Hi Wen,
You children need to take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty (ORAL) after turning 21 and before their 22nd birthday to retain their Singapore citizenship. -oath-taking
Therefore, they need to renounce their Malaysia citizenship when turning 21.
My son is 11 years old this year, I am not sure if I need to apply the Malaysia IC for him too, but I think I will do so. I will share more on this.
However, it should not be a problem to do the renunciation regardless of if my son has a Malaysia IC. If he has a valid Singapore Citizenship certificate that should fine. Anyway, this is my opinion.
I got my in principle approval in early Nov, but will only complete the citizenship journey next week since the booking for Singapore discovery is quite far ahead. My baby would be turning 1 yo by end of January. May I know if I should call ICA to speed up the process? Not sure what would I miss out if baby or me is getting the citizenship after he turns one. Can you please advise me?
Hi Wei,
For travelling back to Malaysia for CNY, my opinion is that do not rush and cramp everything together. Please plan the schedule carefully and find out the lead time for below:
a. Renunciation of Malaysia citizenship at MHC.
b. Appointment at ICA for Singapore Citizenship registration and oath taking.
c. Singapore passport application.
Hi Jessy,
I am not sure about what you mean by you are also the guarantor of your daughter when she was 7 years old. If you applied the Singapore Citizenship as a family unit together with your daughter, she should be holding a Singapore Citizenship status now. From what I understand, she will be required to take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty after turning 21 and before her 22nd birthday to retain her Singapore citizenship.
I renounced my citizenship together with my daughter when she was 5 year old in 2009. I was given a letter by the High Comms for safe keeping until she is 18 years old and that I need to go back to complete the full process. I was wondering whether you are given the same letter too ?
Hi CC,
That is fine. However, very high chance that MHC might not be able to accommodate to your request for dedicated date. You might get a date later than your appointment with ICA. If this is the case, then you can reschedule your appointment with ICA. You can do it either via ICA e-service portal or send an email to
ICA_Citize...@ica.gov.sg.
Hi, grateful for your sharing. Info is scarce from Malaysia website. Do you have any idea if I could renounce Malaysian citizenship while retaining ownership of my properties in msia under my name? Is there anything I need to do for these properties (eg : update msian ic no to Singaporean ic)? Many thanks in advance??
Hi Wong,
My understanding is that you will still own your properties after you change your citizenship. Borang-K is the document that proves your ex-citizenship identity. If you want to sell your properties, you need the Borang-K to prove your identity and ownership. Same case to your bank account.
Please also do your own due diligence to find out more from a lawyer.
Hi Den,
I submitted my old birth certificate. Not sure if there is any change to the procedures. By the way, where did you read that info? I just checked the MHC website, there is no statement mention that you need to submit the latest version of birth certificate. Hi Mandy,
The Letter of approval is referring to the letter that stated you are in the final stage of your Singapore Citizenship application process. You should receive an email from ICA after you completed your Singapore Citizenship Journey. In the email, there will be a link for you to check your application status. You can download the letter using the link.
Alternatively, you can logon to ICA eService or MyICA portal ( ) to download the letter.
