Hello all!
I hope you students are getting settled back in to school and that exams are going well (I've heard rumors of midterms and EOGs/EOCs...good luck!). For our first youth group meeting of 2010, we're going to do something a little different. It's Martin Luther King, Jr. day on Monday, and Duke Chapel is having a special celebration service on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. It's going to be a great service--activist Dolores Huerta is speaking, and the program will include music and dance in a commemoration of King's life. You can learn more at
http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2009/12/MLK.html. I think this would be a great opportunity for youth (and parents as well), so instead of our usual meeting time, we'll attend this event. The program lasts until 4:00, so afterward we'll go get ice cream (or perhaps something less ridiculous considering how cold it's been) and have some time to fellowship and discuss.
Here's the thing: parking is probably going to be a nightmare on campus, so I've come up with some alternatives so we won't have to deal with that. I live near Duke's East Campus, a very short walk from a bus stop where we can catch a bus right to main campus. You are welcome to try to park on West Campus and meet us, but if you would prefer to avoid the crowd, we'll meet at my house at 2:15 to make sure we have plenty of time to get to the Chapel and find some seats. My address is 913 Burch Avenue--it's a big yellow house next to a blue house that's being renovated. Parking is available on the street, or parents can feel free to drop off their youth if they are not coming along. PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you are coming--I would hate to leave for campus only to have someone show up at my house wanting to join us.
I hope you all can come! It'll be a great opportunity and I'd love to have a good group along for the ride. Please let me know if you have any questions, and as always feel free to email, call or text,
704.779.4876. Have a wonderful day!
In Christ,
Sarah Howell
