opening thoughts
OMG nothing escapes their desire to recreate everything in their toxic image
pull facts: A new dime coin entering circulation this year is capturing attention for an easy-to-miss detail in its design
In the updated design, which bears similarities to the Great Seal of the United States, an eagle in flight carries arrows in its talons on one foot as it looks over at the other foot, which is empty
In the original seal, the eagle is holding an olive branch — which symbolizes peace — in its other foot
Founding Father Charles Thompson, who helped design the Great Seal, wrote in 1782 that the olive branch and arrows appearing side-by-side in the eagle's talons “denote the power of peace & war which is exclusively vested in Congress”
but it gets more vile: The Treasury Department will unveil a $1 coin featuring Trump's face, breaking with tradition not to have coins depicting living presidents https://people.com/new-dime-coin-design-missing-olive-branch-11925790

part one: elections
a conversation with Jen Fifield a ProPublica reporter covering election-related issues, voting rights and threats to democracy.

Election Records Handed Over to the FBI in Maricopa County, Arizona, Could Be Fatally Flawed, Experts Say Unlike in Fulton County, Georgia, where actual ballots were seized, a federal grand jury subpoenaed digital data related to a partisan audit of the county’s vote.   https://www.propublica.org/article/maricopa-county-arizona-election-records-fbi

part two:
Mechele Dickerson, a professor at University of Texas Law, about how politicians could rebuild the middle class, which she details in her new book THE MIDDLE-CLASS NEW DEAL: Restoring Upward Mobility and the American Dream (UC Press; January 2026)

ABOUT THE BOOK

In the 1930’s, at the height of the Depression, the US Government passed laws that built the American middle class. Today, as the American Dream slips out of reach for so many, University of Texas Law School professor A. Mechele Dickerson argues that Congress could do the same thing again—but they don’t want to.

In her new book, THE MIDDLE-CLASS NEW DEAL: Restoring Upward Mobility and the American Dream (UC Press; January 2026) Dickerson shows how lawmakers once enacted sweeping reforms, why similar change is possible now, and what forces block it.
