opening thoughts:
Robert Reich:The wealth of the richest 1% in America just hit a record $52 trillion. These are the people now getting huge tax cuts — paid for by cuts to health care for millions of people. Every lie Trump and Republicans tell about the shutdown is meant to distract you from this.

good news:
Global renewable energy generation surpasses coal for first time Record solar expansion and steady wind growth driving world’s shift away from fossil fuels in 2025, report finds https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/oct/07/global-renewable-energy-generation-surpasses-coal-first-time
The world’s wind and solar farms have generated more electricity than coal plants for the first time this year, marking a turning point for the global power system, according to research.

A report by the climate thinktank Ember found that in the first six months of 2025, renewable energy outpaced the world’s growing appetite for electricity, leading to a small decline in coal and gas use.

The world generated almost a third more solar power in the first half of the year compared with the same period in 2024, meeting 83% of the global increase in electricity demand. Wind power grew by just over 7%, allowing renewables to displace fossil fuels for the first time.

The milestone represents “a crucial turning point”

on the ground in chicago...a friend sent this to me on Monday night

I can only say that the fear here is palpable. A neighbor whose mother was born in Mexico, had a lung transplant 6 weeks ago, and is now living with her...she is thinking that perhaps she needs to uproot her entire family and go back to Mexico. Another friend in our neighborhood is having her husband she us he can get his job transferred up to Canada. Another friend a town over has sent her daughter to France for college figuring it would be more stable. A friend who used to work for DOJ is sending her trans daughter to Lisbon to work of her masters degree as opposed to U of Wisconsin for her daughter's safety. People are very afraid.

Well, Arnie, at the rate things are going I might be your eyewitness soon. I live a straight shot west a 15 minute drive - from Great Lakes. ICE is staging everything out of there. Every major corridor of the north suburbs brushes up against that military base. In fact, the primary emergency routes to Northwestern Hospital in Lake Forest here in the north suburbs, which is our primary trauma center, are in that path. As of this morning, we have had helicopters and drones flying all over the north suburbs. Areas including Waukegan and where I live in the Round Lakes area, which contains Little Mexico, (giving you an idea of who our population is) have a heavy Latino population - approximately 50%. A student was just snatched off the campus for the community college, where my husband teaches, 3 miles away. Every Home Depot and Menard's parking lot in the area is filled with ICE agents at this moment. The neighborhood I live in is 50% target material as far as ICE is concerned. Several of my neighbors I've given house keys to, so if they had to, they could come in through the back fence, and into the back door of my home to hide. We actually live in a very nice neighborhood, and drones, and helicopters have been flying over all day. Usually, retired people and people with young children are out going for walks in our neighborhood all throughout the day, and no one is outside today.
