In his stunningly despotic and narcissistic rant before the UN, Donald Trump did more than showcase his low character and astonishing ignorance. He provided clear, convincing proof of his fast deepening mental illness. It was the most shameful speech he's delivered on a world stage, maybe the most dishonest he's given anywhere. It was also truly deranged.

The audience sat in stony silence, aghast at the spectacle of Trump, embarrassed for him and for us. Every other sentence was an easily proved lie and they all knew it. Many Americans are stuck in denial regarding Trump's rapidly deteriorating mental condition, but the rest of the world is now fully on notice. Listening to Trump preen and prattle and spin rapid fire whoppers and borderline hallucinations, it beheld him in all his lunacy and cringed.

Today, in the General Assembly of the United Nations,, the curtain fell on the American Century. The question is whether it will soon fall on America itself. Early media coverage of the speech corrected many of Trump's lies but, by its silence, normalized his behavior. For half of America, his borderline psychosis is like the emperor's new clothes. To have any hope of saving the country we love, the rest of us must say what we see.
