I am Rachel Millner (she/her) and am glad you are here to explore my website and the possibility of working together. I have been working with adolescents and adults seeking therapy for eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, orthorexia, disordered eating, and chronic dieting for over 10 years. All of my work is rooted in Health at Every Size, Body Trust, Intuitive Eating, social justice, trauma-informed care, and fat positivity. I believe that whether you are dealing with an eating disorder, disordered eating, or trying to heal from many years of dieting, all of the ways you have struggled or tried to cope have been wise. You have always done the best you could to take care of yourself, and now you may be seeking therapy to learn different ways.
The culture we live in impacts all of us and the value placed on thinness and "health" in our current cultural climate contributes to eating disorders and disordered eating and makes recovery harder. The dieting (or as Deb Burgard, Ph.D., calls it the weight cycling) industry wants us all to believe that losing weight and keeping it off is possible and that if we aren't successful it's our fault. We have been told lies for a long time. Eating disorders, disordered eating, and dieting, take up our time and energy and impact all areas of our lives. Healing from these struggles allows for more space in your life to do the things that are important to you without the constant battle with food and with your body.
Many clients who come to see me have been struggling for years with an eating disorder and many aren't sure if they have an eating disorder, but know their relationship with food and their body is not what they want it to be. Where ever you are in your personal journey, we can work together to explore these issues and talk about what you would like to be different in your life. While issues around food and body are often what bring clients to see me, most of my clients also want to talk about other things such as trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, etc. We are complex beings and everything in our lives impacts us. In therapy, we talk about all of these things at the pace you decide. I want to get to know all of who you are and what you have gone through at whatever pace feels comfortable for you.
As we work together, I will support you in moving towards a more peaceful relationship with yourself. We can work together to identify what your true values are and what things are most important in your life. Having a more authentic relationship with yourself can allow you to feel freer in your relationship with food and your body and to feel more empowered in your life. It may feel impossible to imagine what life could look like without a constant battle with food and body and without feeling that your past is holding you back, and our work together is partly about recognizing that it is possible. It is not an easy journey, but it is a rewarding one.
While there are common themes among people who come to see me, every one of my clients is unique. I work with adolescents and adults, and often times treatment can look very different depending on the age range of the person I'm working with. I have a lot of experience with Family Based Treatment and family therapy and incorporate HAES and social justice into FBT. Community is very important to all of us, and adults also often benefit from including their support system in treatment in one way or another. When we begin working together, we can decide what treatment approach is best for your particular situation.
I know that, unfortunately, there is still a stigma attached to seeking therapy and my clients are some of the bravest people I know. It is not easy to reach out for support and I am honored when clients invite me on their journey with them. Our work together is collaborative and I trust that you are the expert on your own experience. My work is relational in nature and I view the relationship between the therapist and client as one of the most important components in therapy.
I have a Doylestown and Newtown location. The furniture in both offices is supportive for diverse body sizes. The Doylestown office is not handicap accessible and has a set of stairs in order to reach the office. The Newtown office is fully handicap accessible. Both offices have parking available. I work virtually with consulting clients nationally and internationally, virtually with therapy clients in PA & NJ in addition to in-person clients.
I look forward to working with you, getting to know you, and hearing your story. I appreciate the courage it can take to reach out and I look forward to being a part of your healing journey. Please Call or Text my office at 215-932-9885 to schedule an appointment.
