The new frontier of Venus has degenerated into a dystopia ravaged by the civil war between Ishtar and Aphrodia. Bubbly reporter Susan Sommers arrives in the capitol of Aphrodia just before it's captured by Ishtar. She falls in with a bunch of teen-agers who live for a sort of motorcycle version of Roller Derby. Daredevil rider Hiro and his friends reluctantly join the struggle to free Aphrodia from the invaders. Not surprisingly, Hiro proves an ace at piloting the mono-cycles that are the Aphrodians' secret weapon in the key battle.

Ok off the bat I am in awe of this transfer, the colours are suitably muted and beautiful, the quality of depth and level of detail is amazing, the audio is great (sadly not 5.1 for that superb Joe Hisaishi score). Also considering how fast paced/busy this gets, there is no shortcuts and the quality from the encode is constant. Hell the subtle lighting changes in Maggy's house is astounding. Even the kinda rotascope action sections of the battles with video footage with animation over it, looks really good.

This is a beautifully animated flick with dudes on futuristic motorbikes, news-reporter babes, racetracks and tons of 'splosions. Shaka, bro. The downside to that is the film is very much style over substance, and not a bad thing if the style works for you. Sometimes that's all we need. The film does make some subtle jabs at exploring new frontiers, societal unrest, and the politics that can be involved with civil wars. A teenager who happens to be an ace on a motorbike is pulled into the far-reaching arms of the war, and is to use his sick bike skills to take down an evil general. THIS IS THE EIGHTIES.

A small team of teenage bikers are pulled into a conflict involving warring nations on Venus when their city is violently occupied. Forced to join a group of well armed rebels, lead bad boy must use his skill on a bike to bring down the corrupt general.

Much like every other manga to movie adaption of the 80s, Venus Wars is more of a highlights reel of the source material. But man oh man, do I love the vibrant, alive and organic feel of the animation in this flick. Completely makes up for the meandering plot. Makes me bitter seeing so much crappy CGI that will be outdated after a few years in so much animation these days.

2089, Venus

Man konnte allem Folgen.

Mostly the reason to watch this is that it Looks Really Cool, but there is also a compelling text here about political repression and radicalization. Humanity has colonized Venus, and there it lives out what has always been its fate: war.

The planet is split into two factions, Ishtar and Aphrodia, and shortly after the movie begins, the Aphrodian capital of Io is invaded by the forces of Ishtar, which then declare martial law. A group of adolescent bikers seek freedom from this oppression, but the police forces of Io seem to fight back against their own people harder than they fought against their subjugation.

This was actually the first anime I ever saw as a kid. Way back in the day when the Sci-Fi channel had those anime Saturday nights. I turned it on and was amazed at the animation against the painted backgrounds as the mono-bikes sped along launching missles. I haven't seen it since that first viewing until now and it really holds up so damn well, especially that gorgeous animation. The story is even more timely today as it was back then. Love this one and it still remains one of my all time favorite anime.

Super high quality animation, and the mechanical design and setting designs are so dope. Story is solid, although similarly to Akira it feels like they were cramming a longer manga into one movie. Honestly I think because this is similar to Akira in a lot of stylistic ways it gets forgotten or overshadowed by it, but really this is a cool movie BECAUSE it has those things in common- rebellion youth, war-torn future, biker gangs, mass destruction/wreckage, etc etc. Even if the characters don't stick with you, there's definitely scenes and moments that will resonate. RIYL Akira, Battle Angel Alita, Mobile Suit Gundam, etc etc

late 1980s anime is extremely my shit. this is ripping off so many other properties: akira, star wars, nausicaa. but it doesn't detract at all. you just have to enjoy the ride of any sci-fi political robo anime getting financing.

the year is 2003 and humans have colonized venus and there are two factions at war in a mad max landscape for reasons that are never disclosed by the film. an ACAB motorized unicycle racing gang is caught in the middle and are eventually conscripted and take on the occupying ishtar army.

The epitome of 80s : coolness, relentless youth, scifi action, anti-war drama, synth music (courtesy of the great Joe Hisaishi) great mechanical design, simple yet distinct character design and of course japanese animation at its peak !

Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's style is among the most simple yet elegant and beautiful ones among japanese animators (go check his various manga), and the realistic mechanical and human animation peppered with "cartoonish" bits make it all the more impressive.

Much of the ethical and strategic conversation about military AI tends to hold the nature of war constant and to consider issues having to do with the adoption of automated weapons on the battlefield. Futurists worry, in effect, about the weapons of tomorrow in the wars of today. This leads to important discussions about accurate targeting, unintended civilian casualties, and meaningful human control. These are serious problems, to be sure, and it is vital for policymakers and commanders to consider them. Yet, it is further possible that the political context of war itself might change in interesting ways, either because of the introduction of AI or because of some hidden factor affecting both the development of AI and the evolution of war. The changing organizational or strategic context of war might lead to rather different concerns. These concerns would be less about the ways in which autonomous machines will behave in familiar wars and more about the ways in which human societies will behave in unfamiliar futures.

This article examines the institutional context of AI to sketch out an alternative interpretation of its strategic implications. I proceed in six parts. First, I discuss popular worries about the substitution of AI for human activity. Second, I highlight enduring concerns about the automation of strategic systems that appeared in the 1980s and still resonate today. Third, I briefly summarize the economics of AI, highlighting the key institutional conditions that shape AI performance. Fourth, I argue that the political logic of war tends to undermine these institutional conditions. Fifth, I explore the implications of the tension between the institutional conditions for AI and the political context of war. Unintended consequences include unmanageable military complexity and degraded human security in more limited forms of conflict within the liberal order. Finally, I conclude that the future of military AI will resemble its past in many ways.
