Includes all necessary bogu parts with our ISG Shugo Bogu set. This set includes our shock absorbing 8mm machine stitched futon, perfect for those having regular keiko or just practicing with heavy hitters. As standard this set will also include the ISG Throat Protector to back up the tsuki guard. This helps keep keiko safe, even when practicing tsuki-waza.

Using everything in this set has become second nature to me, and I often forget that all these items come from the same purchase. In general, all the products are great -and I'd like to point out the products that deserve it the most. The kendo uniform set fits amazing, quite lightweight, and quickly became my favorite uniform set. The bogu set itself is good, but I think could use a couple improvements: the kote don't offer the best protection, the black paint on the men has begun to flake off after only a month of regular use, and every once in a while I feel that the men didn't protect my head as well as it should've. Despite all this, I would still recommend this starter set to all new kendoka. I believe the value for money outweighs any small complaints that I have for each individual component of this set, and the general mass of people who would buy this won't really care all too much about things like the paint falling off their men. What's important is that this set gets you immediately ready to enter your kendojo, and begin keiko without hesitation. This set by Tozando does exactly that, and for that reason I'll rate it five stars.

As I write this post at work, I have dozens of kendo books standing in the shelf on my desk: ones about learning the basics, others about how to get better at winning shiai, some general kendo history books, the occasional philosophical treatise, and even a couple of kendo-specific conditioning and training manuals. At home I have out-of-print books that were published in the 20s and 30s, and loads of digital versions of books that were published in the 19th century are on my hard drive. These are all in Japanese of course.

As far as English language publications go, the amount, type, and quality of available books is far from optimal. I know, because I own or have read them all (at least, to my knowledge). I think the main reasons for this has been the writers lack of long term exposure to kendo in Japan, plus the reliance on hearsay and 3rd hand information when relaying anecdotes/facts. For the English speaking kendoka that hungers for kendo information this is a frustrating situation.

Witten by one of the foremost kenshi of the 20th century Ogawa Kinnosuke sensei, the Teikoku Kendo Kyohon (The Kendo Textbook of Imperial Japan) was originally published in 1932, then revised and re-published in 1937. Here, for the first time in any language other than Japanese, we are proud to present a complete translation of the revised version.

Pros: Covers a wide range of topics.
Cons: No illustrations at all; brief descriptions.
Recommended for: mainly those with a mid-level experience level who are actually involved in teaching or coaching of some sort, and for experienced practitioners looking for some advanced perspective.

Pros: The only kendo coaching book written in English by an experienced coach.
Cons: None!
Recommended for: new/mid-level instructors and those with less experience that want to learn more.

The book is basically a collection of mainly bite-sized (around 2 pages in length) personal kendo-related anecdotes. Geoff writes in a friendly, easily understood manner often with comedy, which makes for light reading.

I stated in the opening section that there are few book in the English language that are actually any good. Along with the books reviewed above, the following listed books are widely available and I do personally recommended.

Note: Clearance item is limited to availability. It lists only the available size(s) and good only while supply lasts. Clearance price is the price of the smallest size of the item. A higher price may apply to larger size(s). Clearance item may arrive in different shades of the original color. All clearance item sales are final and non-returnable nor exchangeable. Tiger Claw's Kendo equipment is authentic and heavy duty. One complete set of Kendo equipment includes kendo gloves (kote), kendo head guard (men), kendo chest shield (do), kendo abdomen skirt (tare) and kendo canvas carry bag.

Many of my kendo friends are aware that I drone on endlessly about sae or snap. Often kendoka who have good kihon and timing, fail to make decisive ippon because they do not finish the strike sharply.

Kiai should be sharp and explosive and delivered exactly at the moment you hit the target. Its purpose is to focus all your physical and mental energy on the cut. It emphasises that nothing else exists for you at that moment, only your total commitment to the strike. Some people believe that kiai is made to alert the shinpan that they have scored a point, or that it is a declaration of intent, a bit like naming the pocket in a game of pool. This is far from the truth. Premature kiai means that your energy tails off too early. Using it to claim your point means that your energy peaks after you need it most.

Your kiai should be made in the spirit of sutemi, throwing every last particle of air into a totally unselfconscious scream as you hit. It will naturally continue briefly as you move through into zanshin. In fact a sharp single kiai will automatically make you accelerate past your opponent. Do not be tempted to elongate your kiai into something like the noise of a car with starter motor problems. Me-e-e-e-e-en simply makes you sound needy.

Many people take the view that shiai is about not losing, but surely the reason for taking part is to win. It could be argued that both equate to the same thing, but the mind-set of winning is about courageously exploiting any opportunity with all your mental and physical power.

Of course we do not start any keiko with the intention of being hit. Our objective is to strike first or to break our opponents attack with a successful counter attack, but we can only do this if we have an attacking spirit from the outset

Without the benefit of a private dojo for toshikoshi geiko, my first practice of the New Year took place yesterday. This hatsugeiko was a great way to get back into the swing of kendo and with my wrist injury now mending, I am once again able to call on some oji waza to use against my fitter, faster juniors.

Perhaps because of the holiday break or maybe because it is a reflective time of year, a number of people asked me to help evaluate their keiko. The common theme was that we all seemed to be operating at a single rhythm, by which I mean that there was no real differentiation between the speed of approach, attack and follow through. This could of course be attributed to a surfeit of Christmas pudding, but more likely the cause is just general tension and inability to relax.

Most of us will never achieve this, but there are certainly ways in which we can get closer to the ideal. Good posture and balance and a relaxed, flexible kamae are all necessities. Correct footwork too is essential, with the ability to drive off from the left foot as soon as you see the opportunity. Most importantly the cut itself must be done with relaxed shoulders, elbows and wrists. If you use too much shoulder power, it makes your attack heavy and slow. The feeling on making the attack should be as if you are being pulled upward and forward, accelerating through the strike into zanshin.

Sae also relies on a compound of kendo elements, but by and large refers to the te-no-uchi applied to the strike at the point of impact. I have discussed te-no-uchi in earlier posts, but it is worth reflecting on the fact that hands need to be relaxed. The left hand should do most of the work and you should apply small squeeze from the little and ring fingers of each hand at the point of impact, or slightly after.

So, problem solved, but then thinking about it after I realise that many people are reluctant to commit to aim for their opponents centre in a spirit of sutemi (sacrifice), whether they are initiating shikake or oji waza. This is particularly true for smaller people, who may fear injury from a collision with a bigger person.
