The successor to the RC9 has been completely revised, expanded to include new model types and a large number of models and equipped with great new features. New menu navigation makes it easier to make all settings, calibrate the control unit and quickly adjust the flight conditions.

As I am a student pilot, the feeling of flight is one that I want to be great. I have read lots about Aerofly FS 2. Most people comment on the flight model and say it is more of a game. For most of the flying I have done in Aeroplane, it has felt realistic. It pulls to the left as you accelerate off the runway and pulls to the left when you climb into the sky. Without rudder correction, it will start to veer to the left (which is what it should do on take off). It appears to have a slight amount of adverse yaw when you turn.

X-Plane 11 has everything you could want in a flight simulator. Again, not much to say about X-Plane 11, as it is a well known complete sim. You can fly anywhere in the world and can control every option in your plane.

Rod Machado, the Legendary flight instructor from FSX is the best of the best, as he is down to earth in the way he explains everything in his book. Best preparation and motivation for your flight lessons.

It was the simulator that reintroduced me to flight simming. It seemed pretty decent but had some major drawbacks not least was the lack of any reasonable terrain outside of the areas you can get add on packs (including the free ones) for. That left me a little frustrated and rendered the big jets pretty useless on the package. The planes also seemed pretty simplistic and there was a lack of any add ons to really improve the basic package. The community was really good though.

I think it's difficult to see as a success. Partly I think that it fell into the 'we have to have big jets' when in fact focusing it as a VFR simulator might have been more sensible. It's also an example of how it's difficult to make a simulator successful unless you have third parties providing content.

I grabbed Aerofly FS2 on a steam sale last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it for doing some quick VR trips. But I came from X-Plane 11 and also having real world experience prior to all of that. Aerofly FS2 just lacks so much depth from flight modeling, systems, navigation, weather, lighting, etc. It's very game like in its approach, which isn't a bad thing. For many that just want to fly, it's about the best thing for just jumping in and flying in an easy to use and understand package. What is included all runs smoothly and works quite well. As @redshift27 pointed out, the world just doesn't have as much actually going on and being rendered as in X-Plane 11 (although I couldn't tell you if Aerofly's engine is better optimized but just that it's not rendering nearly as much).

There's a lot to like about Aerofly FS2 from a pure flying and VFR enjoyment standpoint, and it definitely has an easier learning curve than many other simulators.

I have a real world experience as well (around 4800 hours total) and I find some flight models to be quite good. Specially the R22 and specially within ground effect. I find the round effect in AFFS2 to be excellent really.

I've been casually interested in flight sims for years, but always struggled to find time to do anything serious in this direction in terms of equipment or time. But the sweet spot here is probably 'mobile', with the power of modern phone processors and graphics, with the convenience of always being 'with you'. So I've picked (arguably) the four best mobile flight sims (Aerofly FS 2021, Infinite Flight, Rortos RFS, X-Plane 11) and pitched them head to head, for your interest and entertainment!

I should perhaps declare some parameters and disclaimers here. Note the word 'casual' above - with flight simulators, there's an entire spectrum from a simple flight in a Cessna or Airbus to enjoy some scenery and 'being up there', to life-enveloping realism where you take ostensibly a real commercial flight from gate pushback through ATC (Air Traffic Control) and then multiple hours of real time flight, to landing in a planned destination on ALS approach.

In between these two extremes there's me - and probably you, reading this article. Occasional flight sim players won't be too bothered about the finer details, while hard core sim fans will already be set up and will know all this already. But slap in the middle there's a choice of (at least) four major mobile flight sim systems, within which you can traverse most of the sim continuum.

Secondly, and more fundamentally, Aerofly FS 2021 is a one-off cost - and quite affordable at under a tenner in UK money. In these days of us all being 'nickel and dimed' to oblivion by monthly subscriptions for everything, I rail against yet more monthly commitments. For a flight sim game that I might play intensively for a month and then not pick up again for six months, perhaps, it's galling to have to either pay per month in the interim or have the hassle of remembering to cancel a subscription and then revive it, just to fully pay a game. So Aerofly FS wins for me by only requiring one purchase. In fairness, the other three titles can be played with basic airplanes, scenery, and features for free, i.e. without 'Pro' subscriptions, so my slightly strange suggestion would be to leave my 'winner' til last, trying the other three for free and seeing if one feels 'right' to you. If you're still not sure, then pay the 10 and get Aerofly FS 2021.
