ELCRA prohibits discrimination in public accommodations, which includes businesses that provide goods or services to the public. The business does not have to bar someone from entering on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression to be in violation of the law.

Under ELCRA, it is a violation to print, post, or publish a statement or notice which indicates that the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services and facilities of a public accommodation will be refused an individual because of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, or marital status, or that an individual's patronage of a place of public accommodation is objectionable, unwelcome, or undesirable because of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, or marital status.

Since July of this year, MDCR has received a total of 21 complaints of discrimination against Studio 8. Of those, 3 are part of the current charge, another 3 are currently under investigation and 2 are being evaluated to determine if the department has jurisdiction.

Once MDCR has determined through a neutral and impartial investigation that discrimination has occurred, the agency attempts to resolve the complaint through conciliation. If a respondent refuses to come to an agreement, as is the case with Studio 8 Hair Lab LLC, MDCR will file a formal charge of discrimination with an administrative law judge (ALJ), who will set a date for a public hearing. At the hearing, witnesses testify under oath, the rules of evidence apply, and all parties have the right to cross examine witnesses.

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law. In May 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office of Northern District of California reached an agreement with Luna Tattoo Studio in San Jose, California to resolve an allegation under Title III of the ADA that the tattoo studio refused to provide services to an individual with HIV. The agreement includes review by the Department of any relevant policies or procedures, training of staff, written notification to the Department of future complaints, maintaining a written log of potential clients who were not accepted due to a physical or mental medical condition, and $7,000 in compensatory damages for the individual.

In marriages celebrated with a Catholic religious ceremony, alongside the possibility of dissolution of the marriage from the perspective of civil law, sometimes there is a need to clarify whether the conditions required to validate the marriage in canonical law are present when the marriage takes place.

Given the sacramental nature of marriage between baptised persons, under canonical law, only the ecclesiastical court has jurisdiction over this bond and can declare the marriage annulled (can. 1055 2, 1059, 1401 n. 1, 1671 c.i.c.) and only the Pope can declare the dissolution of a marriage if it is ratified and not consummated (can. 1142 c.j.c.).

ISU is in the process of building this class with the help of about $110,000 of generous support from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA) Foundations and PCI Mountain States.

The PCI Foundation and NPCA will each cover half of the total cost for the design studio with a total amount of $85,129. In addition, PCI Foundation and PCI Mountain States will cover up to $24,400 in travel funds for ISU faculty and students to attend the annual PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference for the next four years. The ISU co-principal investigator on the project is Bruce Savage, chair and associate professor of ISU civil and environmental engineering.

He said that ISU has great facilities, including a large-scale testing facility where bridge and building specimens can be tested for their strength and a water resources lab for testing hydraulic structures.

Melissa Verwest, technical sales engineer at Oldcastle Infrastructure, said that the development of a hands-on experience at the academic level through programs such as the ISU design studio will better prepare students who will be the next industry contributors.

ISU civil engineering graduate students Jared Cantrell, Corey Marshall, and Ali Shokrgozar and faculty Mashal and Savage recently attended the PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference, Feb. 26-March 2 in Louisville, Kentucky, where they presented about the studio and ISU research in precast concrete. Ali Shokrgozar, Ph.D. student, also participated in the new Project Precast competition.
