to Maine Bird Atlas Block Busters
In case anyone still hasn't settled on their plans for the weekend, or even early next week, here are some suggestions!  There are still a decent number of unclaimed Blocks in parts of the state which have some, but not a lot, of data so far which are accessible by car and a few which might be a bit harder to reach.  Adding more data to these areas would benefit the Atlas more than visiting areas where others have already spent a significant amount of time.

If someone really wanted to make an impact this weekend, just 4 hours of Atlasing near Fort Fairfield could add a second Completed Block to four different Topo Quads:
Fort Fairfield NW_NE-0:43
Limestone_SW-1:03
Goodwin_NE-0:49
Easton_NE-1:07
And a truly ambitious Atlaser could also visit these Blocks to do the same in two more nearby Topo Quads:
New Sweden_NE-3:00
Fort Fairfield_NW-2:34
All six of those Blocks are accessible by car, so hopefully it will simply be a question of who gets there first!

For this list I arranged the Blocks by Region, so Blocks which are near each other geographically are mostly near each other on the list.  I put Blocks in Bold if they are in areas of the state where we could really use more data.

Lastly, if anyone is considering any of the Blocks which require a snowmobile or boat to reach, there are still a few Priority Blocks you might want to visit instead:
Spring Lake_NE-not sure what the best snowmobile approach might be
Wadleigh Mtn_CE-~20 mile snowmobile ride from Kokadjo to reach Block
Johns Island_NW-just east of Isle au Haut
Mount Desert Rock_NE-pretty far out there!

It's been so exciting to see more and more Blocks Completed each day.  I can't wait to see what we might accomplish by next Wednesday.  Happy Atlasing!

One correction to Kate’s excellent summary sheet:  Wadleigh Mtn CE may indeed be a 20-mile snowmobile ride from Kokadjo, but if you drive up past Kokadjo and out the Smithtown Road toward AMC’s Medawisla Lodge (you’ll see the signs for it), there is a well-groomed ski/snowmobile/snowshoe trail that will get you into the Wadleigh Mtn CE block in about 4-5 miles.  It starts on the Smithtown Road, less than a mile west of the Medawisla entrance road.  The weather conditions tomorrow should be great for atlasing, wherever you are!  Good birding to all in these last few days!
