What file format utilises this "Import POI" function?

You mean the "Open POI" menu ?

Those are ready poi files used for offline search.

We build them in Mapsforge download server:
http://download.mapsforge.org/

Also OpenAndroMaps provides poi files in:
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openandromaps/pois/

Yop. Exactly these.

I looked into one of them and found that these are SQLite3 with RTree.

Is there any documentation on their scheme?
