Hi! I'm Helen. I'm a PhD student from Linguistics Dept. My research
interests are mainly on human interaction and conversation. Right now
I'm working on my dissertation, which is about how Mandarin speakers
in face-to-face conversation make use of prosodic patterns (consist of
frequency, loudness, length, pause, and other sound cues) to achieve
conversational interaction (such as to make a request, to ask a
question, to search for words to express your thoughts and
ideas....). Currently I'm not teaching any class. But in the past
I've taught Mandarin Chinese (mostly for beginners), and TA-ed some
introductory courses from linguistics. I'm hoping to find a teaching
position in Chinese language and/or Chinese linguistics after
graduating (though not sure when the graduating part will happen...).
So when Edwige mentioned this course and project to me, my immediate
reaction was: that sounds cool, and I would like to learn more about
that!
Cooking and baking? Count me in....those are what I do mostly when I'm
not working. My cooking is mostly Chinese food, and I do a little
baking, whenever I feel like to. I have to agree with a friend of
mine, who is very good at baking, saying that "it (baking) is a very
'relaxing' activity!" And if anyone feel like to try some authentic
Chinese food, I'd be happy to bring some!
