I just wanted to let you guys know (if you haven’t seen posts already) that there will be an EBFM oriented international symposium in Penang 10-13 May next year

It is to see what has been achieved since the Reykjavik declaration in 2001 and to set directions for coming years/decades. I think it should be a good meeting (for transparency I am on the convening committee so may have a bias) and it would be great to see you there.  I think people in this group have done a lot to advance the science.

As many of you know I’ve been noodling around with Atlantis now for more than 25 years. At times my progress and fiddling can be slow or maddening when I break the code. Thanks to a very active and motivated group things are settling down and opening up to more people contributing into the code now it is on GitHub (https://github.com/Atlantis-Ecosystem-Model/AtlantisTrunk) and protocols are established.

Over the course of coming months there will be a few upgrades

1. I have been trying to get out since Feb where I have been systematically upgrading the internal code to make it more “modern standard” and to find small hidden bugs. That will see a new release in coming months as the main trunk moves to that. Functionally it should not look any different but because of the bug fixes it is likely some models may see a change (where a bug was influencing the model and it is something we cannot replicate with a flag to retain old code/alternative code paths in the code base). Please keep track of your version so you can maintain your current code base to get you project done. We will make sure people are waned ahead of that switch once I ahem definite date.
   
   
2. On an even slower time schedule I am bringing across all the “Beth only” code to the main branch to open up land side options for Atlantis. I’ll let you know more about that as it happens, but just to flag it's happening

3. CSIRO has thankfully seen sense and Javier is still a part of the Atlantis team based in CSIRO. As part of that he has been leading work on some new AI based tools to help with calibration. I am being the guinea pig to start but if others are interested please let us know. Though now is also a good time to remind people of the recently released really useful paper lead by Alaia Morell on using the r package calibrar with Atlantis

4. As the pool of people actively working on the backend of Atlantis grows it is likely a good time to relaunch the “I would like” list. We used to run this years ago but as people working on Atlantis slimmed back down to me we fell back to direct requests. I am happy now to re-open the list this time via GitHub - create an issue outlining what you need and we can look into what is possible.
