One of the most beautiful things about the Spanish culture, according to the novel, is its commitment to family. The book clearly shows that respect for the family is a fundamental aspect of Spanish culture. That seems to be lost on many Americans who, unfortunately, have abandoned their families to find wealth and freedom without ever really knowing where they came from. While the novel focuses on two generations of Spanish immigrants, it could have been written about any group of people, and the principles of unity and family life would certainly apply.
