Mastery by Greene is the fourth book by the American author Robert Greene. The book examines the personal lives of prominent historical figures including Darwin and Ford, and the personal lives of modern leaders including Winston Churchill and George W. Bush, and explores what led to their greatness. Greene also delves into the psychological aspects of leadership and provides ample examples from history. There are chapters on the nature of leadership, its definition, the characteristics of successful leaders, the art of persuasion, and Greene's own experience as a leader. The book concludes with a look at leadership in the contemporary world, including the critical need to redefine and reconstruct the institution.

The book contains many memorable stories of Greene's leadership, which are as varied as his expertise on the subject. Greene tells of his historic walk across the United States, his dramatic reading of Shakespeare, and his trip to India and China, all the while walking in the footsteps of some of the most important personalities of his time. I especially liked the chapter on Gandhi, where Greene examines the pivotal events that changed the path of that leader's career, and offers lessons on courage and perseverance. I also enjoyed learning that Greene had a personal connection to Gandhi, owing to their shared membership in the Anti-Facist League.
One thing I thought the book lacked was a world map. I thought there were several better ways to illustrate the concepts Greene was discussing and wanted to know how he would have presented the map if it had been available. This is not a problem, however, as the end of the book has a world map showing the distribution of geographic features around the world, with each country colored in according to its status. There are also appendices available with maps of the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. Other appendices include war history, an appendix on Gandhi's life, a photo essay of Gandhi in retirement, a timeline of world history, and a timeline of world development.
