In this first of a series of six books on the life and works of Leopold Bloom, David Norton presents a detailed account of Bloom's life and works focusing on his defense of slavery and his rejection of utilitarianism. The essays Norton includes in this case study provide a vivid portrait of the dynamic nature of moral argument. Although utilitarianism may appear to be a simple philosophy in its most common form, its underlying assumptions and presuppositions can become quite maddening for those that must confront them in the course of their daily lives. Norton includes a number of personal reflections on Bloom and on his own life and work as an artist that show how the philosophical arguments of his time were deeply affected by his lived experiences. The Ethical Life by Shafer-Landau is a valuable addition to the students' library as it offers a systematic argument and a number of richly illustrated case studies.
