Atlanta Sacred Harp July 2022 Newsletter

July 2 & 3, 1st Sunday and Saturday before, 9:00 am Central Time on Saturday, 9:30 am CT on Sunday. Henagar-Union Convention, Liberty Church, 2 miles north of Henagar AL on Liberty Road.  From Henagar Crossing, take Hwy 40 west to the Farmers Telephone Cooperative. Turn right and go to dead end. Turn right, take first left past Henagar Methodist Church (Liberty Rd). Church is on right, approximately 1.5 miles. Info: David Ivey (256) 258-8660, david -at- davidivey -dot- com. July 7 - First Thursday Singing at Emory Presbyterian ‘Christmas in July’ singing. 7:00pm-9:00pm (or until it’s too dark!)   We’ll plan to sing outside again (weather permitting), Emory Presbyterian Church, 1886 North Decatur Rd, Atlanta GA 30307. Park behind the church, off Westminster Way. We will be singing Christmas songs from the Sacred Harp, An American Christmas Harp, and The Eclectic Harmony. Feel free to bring copies of any 4-shape Christmas songs you like. Holiday snacks and attire encouraged! July 9, Saturday before 2nd Sunday, 10:00 am, 16th Annual Sacred Harp singing at  Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church, 2052 Fairview Road, Stockbridge, GA. Info: Jesse Roberts, (678) 386-6438  jroberjr -at- bellsouth -dot- net.  10am-3pm with dinner on the grounds.  GPS Coordinates: 33.606649, -84.175922.  From I-675 southbound, take Exit 5, Forest Parkway/Panola Road. Turn east (left). Go approximately 3.3 miles to East Atlanta Road. Turn left. Turn right at next intersection – Fairview Road. Go 4.6 miles. Meetinghouse is on the right. From I-75 southbound or northbound, take Exit 228, GA-138. Turn east for approximately 1.5 miles to North Henry Boulevard/US23. Turn right. Travel for approximately 2.5 miles to Pinehurst Road. Turn left. Travel on Pinehurst Road until dead-end (approximately 1.2 miles). Turn right on Old Conyers Road. Go approximately 2.7 miles to Flat Shoals Church Road. Turn left on Flat Shoals Church Road. Travel approximately 1 mile to fork in road. Take right fork. Meetinghouse is on left. From I-20 East, one exit past I-285 east of Atlanta, exit on Wesley Chapel Road. Turn right. Travel 0.3 miles. Turn left on Snapfinger Road. Travel for 7.8 miles. Enter turnabout, and take first right on Fairview Road. Meetinghouse is 0.7 miles on left. NOTE: At lunch, sanitize your hands before you set out your food, and sanitize them at the front of the lunch line before you get your plates, eating utensils, and napkins. If you go back for seconds, throw your first plate and utensils away and start the process over

July 9, Saturday, 27th John Campbell Folk School Singing - THE JOHN CAMPBELL FOLK SCHOOL, Brasstown, NC. https://www.folkschool.org  This year will be held outdoors, at the Open House. Bring a mask. All indoor facilities at the Folk school require masks to be worn.

July 10, 2nd Sunday, 1:15 pm to 3:15 pm. Hardeman Primitive Baptist Church, 3965 Glenwood Rd., Decatur GA. Singing from the 1911 J. L. White edition of the Sacred Harp. Canceled for 2022 (planning to have the all day singing, 3rd Sunday in September)

July 17, 3rd Sunday evening, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm, 3rd Sunday evening, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm,  Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church, 1015 E Rock Springs Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30306.  Lesson from 6:00pm-6:25pm, with singing to follow from 6:30p-8:30p. July 23, Saturday, 10:00 am, The Swannanoa Gathering Shape Note Singing, in the Morris Pavilion at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC, near Asheville. Note that Morris Pavilion is an 'open air' pavilion, but is shaded and used for classes taught during the summer. Dress to stay cool and bring your hand fans! July 24, 4th Sunday, 10:00 am, Mount Zion Memorial, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 49 N Prospect Ave, Mt Zion, GA 30150, 8.5 miles west of Carrollton on Hwy. 16. In Mt Zion, turn north on N. Prospect. The church is on the right, just after the school. Dinner on the grounds at noon.  We will plan to observe a time for remembering Rebecca Over as part of the Memorial Lesson.
