Hi Everyone!

I am seeking some advice and hoping someone can assist. I had a job in software support for 11 years working with Access but mostly MySQL except with a shit company. I left that job last summer to work with a managed service provider, which is a fantastic opportunity. I have been pondering the idea of being either an SQL dev or database admin. I really enjoyed working with databases all day. I taught myself and achieved my CCNA and want to see how difficult it would be to A) get another db job, and B) what jobs like that are in demand.

Has anyone been in my shoes or know someone who has?
How did you get to where you are?
Do you know any groups I could seek to get more info?
I'm in NE Atlanta and I know that either Atlanta or Alpharetta is where most of these jobs are. I'm a good learner and very detail oriented so I think it's a good match for my skills.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guru,

Not really. I went to SQL Saturday a few weeks ago and was hoping to meet some folks there but didn't quite happen. Do you have any advice?

Michael,

Network! Network!  I haven't attend the SQL server meetings in Alpharetta but that group is a good place to start.  Honestly, ask the chapter president if you could let the group know if they have any advice, just like you did in this email. Actually I think more people respond face-to-face then over email. Also, attend a few SharePoint and Dev meetings to get feel for the groups to see if they will be a good fit for you. Alos develop a niche, like auditing, handling sensitive data, like PII, PHI, classified data, etc and/or working in the cloud.

Also, create a LinkedIn page (I need to update mines).

I hope this helps.

Michael,

Energy Consulting with GE is hiring. You should look there.

Hi Michael,

There are a few large networking groups in North Atlanta. Once of them has an IT subgroup.  Connect with me on LinkedIn or chat wth me off line and we can talk.
