ATHENS, GA (AP)—Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell."

The Republican lawmaker made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman's banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.

During the remarks, Broun said that he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days. Those beliefs are held by fundamentalist Christians who believe the creation accounts in the Bible are literally true.

Broun spokeswoman Meredith Griffanti told the Athens Banner-Herald that Broun was recorded speaking to a church group about his religious beliefs. He sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Some background for those not familiar with Scientology...

There are a number of Scientologists who still believe in the L.Ron Hubbard "technology" that the church uses, but disagree with the way the Church itself is being run.  The Church mercilessly persecutes these folks, spies on them, and so on.  The Church claims they are stealing technology and violating copyright and so on.  The people claim they just want to practice their religion on their own.  So most of them have to be very careful about what they post.

I stumbled on this blog that appears to be anonymously written by one of these "renegade" Scientologists who lives here in Atlanta.  Check out this post where he talks about leaving a cell phone at the receptionist, and having the receptionist not only PEEK at the private contents of the phone but also write a report to her superiors about it!

This is right here in Atlanta.
