I wanted to share ATLANTA JOB SEARCH TIPS with those of you looking

ATLANTA JOB SEARCH TIPS FOR THOSE THAT ARE LOOKING:

RESUME
- Make sure it has PROPER GRAMMAR, PUNCTUATION, AND NO TYPOS, ETC….
- Make sure it has a FORMAL FORMAT – BE CLEAR & CONCISE, WOW FACTOR & TELL A SUCCESS STORY
- Utilize Resume Books from Barnes and Nobles/Borders
- Hire a professional resume writer if needed
- Make sure you include Data, Stats, $, %,  People Managed, Projects Managed, Full Scope of your positions
- For every point on your resume – ask “SO WHAT?” and answer with using your data
- PROVE your SUCCESS, SELL YOUR CAPABILITIES, SHOW what you really did
o BRAG how great you were, if you can’t sell yourself, no one will want to hire you
- TAILOR every resume you send specifically to the job you are applying for
o Whatever the job description is, make sure you include all KEY TERMS in your resume!
- Make sure all VERB tenses are PAST tense for Previous Positions held.
- Use a Wide Variety of ACTION verbs (SEE ACTION VERB LIST)
- Resume Length – 1-5 years upto 1 page, 5-10 years upto 2 pages, 10yrs + 2+ pages

JOB LOOKING
- Indeed.com, Google “job title” “city”, there are thousands of job search websites out there
- Social Networks – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
- Family / Friends / Neighbors (3 Foot Rule – if someone is within 3ft, start a conversation!)
- College Career Center – most schools offer alumni career help
- Personal Contact/Business Cards (Name, Email, Cell, Linkedin URL, 3-5 bullets of what you do)

LINKEDIN TIPS
- Completely update and optimize LinkedIn Profile
- Connect to every single person you can, the more connections the better
- Add your picture (professional look)
- Get 10+ Recommendations
- Join 25+ groups related to your professional/social industry and Universities, etc…
- Each LinkedIn group has a Jobs Section – this is a JOB GOLDMINE
- Search for Recruiters / HR Contacts / Co. Hiring Managers

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Sign up at every staffing firm/recruiter site you can – Most co hire “contract” first then turn to Permanent.
- Growth and Money is in SMALL and MIDSIZE companies right now. Esp PRIVATE companies.
- Get ideas from Atlanta Business Chronicle, Business Week, WSJ, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!
- Start a BLOG (wordpress or Blogger) and be a SME in what you want to do, especially if you are transitioning into a different industry.
- Learn how to TWITTER, post on FB what you are looking for…LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA outlets….
- Go to Association meetings – ie – I went to AIMA meetings and Atlanta Marketing Forum meetings, bc their members do what I wanted to do, and they were employed….you volunteer at the meetings and attend for free.
- DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP/INFORMATION/ADVICE
You’d be surprised how many people will take 5 minutes to help someone – esp if you can say “I know so and so, and I was wondering……”
- Be OPEN, do not pigeonhole yourself to one co, city, job function, Keep an OPEN MIND!
- DO NOT GET CAUGHT UP in I need to be making $XXX,XXX– there are tons of people laid off and taking HUGE paycuts just to have a job. Instead concentrate on your abilities/talents/what you bring to the table. Find a job that you want and can grow w/ the company…if you do what you love, the money will follow.
-  Utilize your spare time to get involved w/ Volunteer work, take a class, network, brush up on skills
-  DO NOT EMAIL YOUR RESUME WITHOUT A CLEAR VISION OF WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AND WHAT YOUR “5 KEY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS ” ARE IN THE BODY COPY.
-  Apply for Jobs that have similarities to your background – you never know what positions a CO will hire for next!

BOOKS TO READ
- 60 Seconds and You’re Hired – Robin Ryan (I SWEAR by this book)
- 250 Interview Questions – Vanderbilt Business School
- $100K Resume Book
- Any of the books in the Career Section at B&N / Borders / Amazon (Research, Prepare, Research, Prepare)
