Thanks Jett and Jason for offering your "shoulders" to lean on! Ali and I really appreciate having tech support through our skilled volunteers - you have no idea what a difference it makes in our work...

Atlanta Bicycle Coalition has a backlog of requests that if spread
around would not impose too much on any one person. Here is a list of
current projects. All projects listed here can be worked on over the
internet from home -- or office, but I'm not suggesting that ;). Not
many volunteer jobs are this cushy, or provide so much benefit
relative to the amount of effort.

    - For ride registration and product purchases, we'd like to offer
encrypted sessions (SSL). Most people don't care, but we have lost a
few purchases because our session isn't encrypted. (Credit Card info
is secure via a session with PayPal, so no worries there.) Much of
the work has been completed, but there are a few remaining items to
    work through.

    - One item that is holding up SSL is about 6 modules require security
updates. An annoying notice about the required updates is presented
on most pages whenever we enable the SSL module. We have a procedure
for performing the updates. We just need to crank through them.

    - The website has a number of 'cron' jobs that should be run
periodically. We get warnings about these and have found that our
membership records depend on running at least one of these jobs
periodically. We have reason to believe there are other jobs which
should be running, but haven't explored these. Once this is setup, it
    runs automatically.

    - The Starter Bikes program is using our website to accept payment for
bikes, locks, lights, and helmets. There are a number of tasks that
would help us streamline what is a cumbersome procedure at this time.
We have a "user representative" who knows how it should work. We just
need to get the website to behave accordingly.

    - We have on-going needs to clean-up our membership records.
Duplicates and out-of-date info (bouncing email for example) are the
two biggest problems. We'd like to establish procedures for
automating this clean-up so it is less of a burden each time we
    attempt to tackle the problem.

    - We'd like to get Google Analytics going on the website.

There are also a number of requests for help with HTML, posting pages,
installing modules, and other general work with the PHP-based Drupal
application. Working these other tasks will provide much of the
    training required.

For many of our volunteers, getting access to the system to do this
work has been an issue. These procedures have been streamlined as
well. I'll be happy to meet with you to get this setup on your
    machine.

I've spent some time packing up the work into bundles to be lifted. A
willing shoulder is better than an experienced shoulder. Let me know
    if your shoulder is willing.

How about picking a weekend where we all get together and hammer this out?
Meet at the ABC office or maybe an area coffeeshop.

    Hey Jason,

It sounds like your shoulder is available.

I like the idea of getting everyone together who can help out and then
dividing up the tasks. I'm still settling my schedule for this coming
weekend, but I'll send out an invite once I know when I'll be available.
I'll also provide some options so we can decide what time would match up the
    best.

I think getting together will be particularly good for some of the larger
    projects we're considering:

    - Review and evaluation of our CRM system
    - Automating the capture of bicycle counts and surveys
    - Bike Train tool for organizing and publicizing bike trains
    - Online version of the Bike Suitability maps

Getting together would also be a good chance for me to walk through what it
takes to work over the internet. Having worked remotely for many years, it
caught me off guard how difficult this would prove to be.

If someone has time and interest to work on one of the tasks listed below
before we meet, we'll walk through it together. If something is complete by
the time we meet, that's OK. New work will probably pop up ;).

My interest in in spreading the workload across multiple volunteers who will
have experience with ABC's website and software tools. This list below is a
    good list to "train" with.

Interested to hear other's viewpoints on this and also if there are tasks
anyone would like to tackle before we meet as a group. Any of the six tasks
below would be an opportunity to transfer some knowledge while making some
progress on the To Do list.

Can someone help me with a Google Map project. I cannot figure out how to populate placemarks with a list of addresses. I've never created a map but was pretty sure that moving that damn blue flag around trying to find the precise location on a map was not the most efficient way to get things done.

Any takers?
