Winder-

After news of Barrow County Animal Control officer's failure to feed
and water animals at the shelter over the Labor Day weekend, county
investigators revealed Friday they are looking into allegations of
impounded animals being euthanized with gunshots or by being being
clubbed over the head.

Lt. Darrell Tidwell of the Barrow County Sheriff's Department said
the allegations include dogs being shot, both at the shelter and in
the field, rather than being put down with a lethal injection in
accordance with state law.

The sheriff's office has been investigating the allegations of
improper euthanasia methods for several weeks, assembling evidence and
testimony in preparation for turning the case over the Piedmont
District Attorney's Office.

Tidwell said he expects to be able to turn over the results of that
investigation to the District Attorney sometime next week.

The shootings and clubbings are alleged to have occured earlier this
year while former animal control director Kenneth Aldridge was still
employed by the county.

Aldridge resigned in June after the county investigated complaints
that he had made false statements to citizens inquiring about animals
taken into custody by animal control.

Aldridge was suspended for three days after an incident in which he
alledgedly told an emu owner that the large, flightless bird had been
adopted out after being captured, when in fact it had been shot to
death by an animal control officer.

Aldridge was reprimanded previously in that incident when a county
resident lodged a formal complaint with the county after animal
control put her pet to sleep without waiting the customary five days.

Tidwell said he also expects the investigation into the Labor Day
weekend incident to be wrapped and turned over to the District
Attorney's office next week.

A Barrow County Animal Control officer was terminated Thursday after
an internal investigation by the county Marshal's Office determined
the officer failed to provide any care for impounded animals over the
Labor Day weekend.

During the three-day period, no food was provided the animals, no
water was provided to the cats at the shelter and none of the daily
cleanings of the animal enclousures were performed , according to
Marshal Jim Floyed.

Four puppies died during that weekend of complications resulting from
parovirus, a contagious disease which results in intestinal
hemorrhaging.

Six other puppies in the enclosure with the dead animals scavenged on
the bodies Those six were later diagnosed with parvovirus and had to
be put to sleep.

Animal control employees arriving at the shelter after the Labor Day
weekend discovered the situation and took immediate action to for the
animals, said Floyed.

Floyed turned the results of his investigation into the incident over
to the sheriff's investigators Friday.
