Agreed. When I was going to college in Atlanta one of my freinds had a
similar experience with these people. Given their service, I find it hard
to believe that they are still in bussiness (I left Atlanta in 1988).
However, Rhythm City happens to be a good pawn in negotiating prices with
other vendors. Their mail-order department will readily quote prices which
are 60% (sometimes less) than list price. I have used them on two occasions
to negotiate prices here in Dallas.

Sounds like a horror story. I'd recommend talking to a manager, and if that
doesn't work, writing a letter to the manufacturer.
I have heard many bad things about them also, but I went ahead and bought a
Fender Tele from them because of price and selection plus the salesman wasn't
too much of a dick (though the first one I got was and I blew him off).
Fortunately, the guitar hasn't need service but, if it did, I always figured
I'd take it to another Fender authorized shop. I wouldn't feel guilty about
taking the guitar elsewhere for warranty service because, I believe, normally
the shops charge the manufacturer for the service and make money off the
service (please let me know if that's wrong).
What kind of guitar is it? I can recommend some local Fender shops.

Seems like some things never change. I bought a DX7IIFD /E!
many years ago. I live in VA and bought it mail order. The
price was good but I was told I would get a lot of voices from
their library. I never did.
A few months later I was in Atlanta and visited the store. I
told the salesman that I wanted to get some of the voices he
had promised. He just walked away. I left also, never to spend
another penny there.

I spent quite a bit of money in there a few years ago.... Unfortunately,
because of a mixup with the bank, the check bounced. I immediately
mailed them a cashiers check, and called them to let them know. They
sent the off duty atlanta police officer that works there, in his
uniform, to my house to harass me. (A clear violation of the law). I
wrote them a letter making it clear that that was not to happen again,
the dickhead owner filed a warrant for me for a bad check (after he had
cashed the cashiers check (another clear violation of the law) )... So I
have charged him with malicious prosecution and it still hasn't been
disposed of yet.
They are real assholes... Don't give them a cent. Better to go
through mailorder if you can't find it anywhere else.

I purchased a guitar several months ago with which I had a small
problem that needed to be fixed by the factory. I was willing to send
it back to the factory myself, but Rhythm City could not provide me
with the information to do so, and insisted that it had to go through
them. OK, no problem so far.
Several weeks later I called Rhythm City to find out the status.
I found out that my guitar had been sitting in their store all that
time and "had just gone out yesterday" because they were waiting
for the guitar manufacturer to send a call back tag. Things are
starting to smell fishy. But OK -- I "know" it's on its way now.
A few weeks go by and I haven't heard anything, so I go into Rhythm
City to speak with Allen Stroo, the salesman with whom I have been
dealing. He says he will do what he can for me to find out what
the status of my guitar is. I ask him if he can put me in touch
directly with the guitar manufacturer. He says that he has to talk
to his "rep" to find out how to get in touch with them. OK.
I call him periodically during the course of the next month and got
the same line. "I haven't talked to my rep, but I'm going to talk to
him today or tomorrow."
"Ok," I tell him. "I'm going to call you every day," I threaten.
"Ok," he says.
I don't follow up on my threat, instead I wait a few days to call.
And get the same line again. Finally, today, I called and said, "look,
Allen, you've been saying that for over a month now. I'm getting
really frustrated."
His response, "I'll take care of it."
I say, "You've been saying that for a month."
He says, "Look buddy, I've got a lot to do here. I can't just sit here
talking to you all day on the phone."
I say, "Hey, I've been a good customer to you, and you're treating me
like shit."
He responds, "I'm not treating you like shit, but I can." And hangs up!
He hung up on me in mid-sentence.
Since I've had this experience, I've spoken with other musician friends
of mine that have had equally negative experiences at Rhythm City. I've
considered talking to the floor supervisor, but for what? They all know
how business is done there. It's dispicable.
I had a bad experience years ago at Rhythm City when they were in their
previous location, after which I swore I'd not go back. After those years,
I decided to give them another chance. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Go somewhere besides Rhythm City if customer service is important to you.
I didn't listen when someone told me this before, and I wish I had.
For me, the last straw was being hung up on. You just don't do that to
your customers.
If someone from Rhythm City is reading this -- prove to me that you have
good customer service and I'll make a retraction.

I would be waving a huge wad of cash around (after I finished counting
down), and the sales people would flock to me. Then I'd say "Too bad.
You had your chance and you all blew it!" THAT would be extremely
satisfying!
If you want good quality service (though they *are* actually overworked
and very busy at times), better prices, and more knowledgable sales
people in a friendly, less sterile environment where people treat you as
humans, go to Atlanta Discount Music. It's right down the street, on
Clairmont ave. Just head down the access road, and go under 85. It's
about 1/2 mile past Buford Highway. Rhythm City does have a much better
selection, but ADM is just a friendlier environment.
One more thing. Don't go to Dirt Cheep Music on Cobb Pkwy. The owner
there is a complete asshole! I went there to buy a used JC-120 (mine was
stolen from RTM), and the guy, John something or other, the owner or
manager or something was *very* rude to me. I wanted to test the thing
out. He complained about having to move it 1 foot just to plug it in
(the damn thing is on casters, for christ's sake!). Then I told him I
wanted to try it out with a guitar similar to mine to get an idea of how
it would sound compared to my old one, and he said "NO! This guitar will
do just fine!" And he handed me an old used Kramer from like 1985. When
I came back the next day to buy the amp, he decided it was more important
to talk to a friend of his in the store for almost 30 minutes than to
help me buy it. I told him, after hovering around him while he was
conversing (another good annoyance tactic), that I needed to buy it NOW.
If he wanted to seel it to me he would have to continue his coversation
later. Then he chrged me the American Express processing fee on top of
the purchase price (that's illegal, and it is prohibited by AmEx in their
agreements with vendors). I promptly sent a copy of my reciept to AmEx,
who replied by saying that they would contact him via phone, and that
they would make sure that it would never happen there again.
Oh, yeah, there is a great instrument repair shop in the same building as
ADM. Just ask any one in ADM where it is.

The most expensive one I tried, a Delux Plus I think, had a noticeable ground
problem as soon as it was plugged in. There was that unmistakable hum coming
out of the amp that hadn't been there on any of the previous 6 guitars I had
tried. At first, the salesman tried to tell me that there was nothing wrong
with the guitar. Finally, I got him to acknowledge the hum. I had no doubt
that he would have been happy to sell me an axe that he knew to be defective.
The salesman was talking about selling hundreds of Strats a week, leaving me
with the impression that, however expensive the one I bought turned out to be,
my purchase mattered little to them.

Last month I bought $2000 worth of PA equipment. I shopped around first,
visiting both Rhythm City and Atlanta Discount Music in the process. I
also checked with several friends first, and heard the Rhythm City horror
stories. Some checking resulted in the discovery that the mixer Rhythm
City was trying to sell me was crap.
I ended up buying from Howie Harnick at Galaxy Music Center, located at
6167 Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain. Their phone is 879-8381. In spite
of the holiday rush, I received the best prices and patient, apparently
very knowledgeable counseling from start to finish. Both Atlanta Discount
and Galaxy quaranteed that they would keep me in sound from their store if
I ever had a problem, and both places have that rep from what I've heard.

their records. Those dolts.
Yes I got a good price for my equipment. But when you add up all the
long distance phone calls I made to those idiots, I actually came
up worse than if I had bought locally here in Charlottesville.

Music. American Discount is affiliated with Rhythm City (I don't completely
understand how) so they have the exact same prices & selection, but for some
reason they aren't as crowded and the sales guys are a lot more easy going.

I bought a Tascam 464 at Rhythm City because they were the cheapest in town at
the time. As I said above, check out American Discount.
You know, Rhythm City might be big, and their advertising ubiquitous,
but word-of-mouth (and word-of-internet) will work against them so
that they will either suffer as a business or be forced to improve.
IMHO, Rhythm City is the antithesis of what an American business
should be.

Yes, Rhythm City wins the award for the worst sales staff in the U.S. The
fact that they still do tons of business illustrates that the
overwhelming factor in a buying decision is price, price, price. The
quality of service really doesent matter to us, otherwise they would go
out of business!
Couple this with a good selection and wham---tons o' business. The owner,
George is largely responsible for the high pressure environment, almost
all of the sales staff suck.
You can do o.k. there if you remember several things 1) have cash in hand
if you want any attention 2) every price is negotiable, the deal you get
depends on your bargaining skills - be persistent and firm. 3) remember,
most of the sales people are failed looser musicians with no life DONT
LET THEM JERK YOU AROUND. 4) once you pay for it its yours. YOU have to
deal with the manuf. with any claims. Most of the major brands have
author. service centers in Atl. Deal with them.

Unfortunately for me, I _had_ to send my guitar back to the factory
through Rhythm City. I sincerely wanted to deal with the factory myself,
but the terms under warranty didn't allow it.
However, I now _am_ dealing directly with the factory, trying to get this
straightened out. They don't even have a record of my guitar being sent
(this is after Allen told me repeatedly that the factory themselves had
sent an RMA for it).
After Allen hung up on my in midsentence while I was trying to find out
what was going on, I decided to complain directly to Korg, the
manufacturer of my particular unit.
I'm hoping that Korg can use its power to get this straightened out, and
must say that dealing with them is a real pleasure in comparison. I just
wish I had my guitar.
I've heard so many great things from different people about Atlanta
Discount Music. I'll be going there from now on, and avoiding Rhythm
Shitty like the plague.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The message that
Rhytm City is sending out is pretty clear to me. I won't rip them off
because I won't buy from them. Period. However, if they rip a friend
off, I see that as them KNOWINGLY taking advantage of someone's
ignorance. If that is the case (and it is) I will conduct myself in a
similar manner, with no guilt because they set the tone and the
environment, not I. However, I won't have to worry about this becuase I
won't buy from them.
