Link returns to the Clock Tower at the end of the Final Day to confront the Skull Kid again, for the last time. The Skull Kid begins to bring the Moon down to Termina once more, but this time, Link summons the Four Giants with the "Oath to Order" to stop its descent. The Four Giants successfully halt the Moon's fall and knock the Skull Kid unconscious. Tatl and Tael reunite,[57][58] and Tatl chastises the Skull Kid for lacking the strength of will and heart to withstand the great power of the Majora's Mask.[59] Now seeing the Skull Kid as useless,[60] Majora's Mask separates itself from him and warps inside the Moon. There, the Mask now possesses the Moon entirely and attempts to consume all of Termina.[61] Link and Tatl follow the Mask inside, finding a surreal field, in which there is nothing but a tree and five children wearing the masks of the bosses of the game. After talking to the child who wears Majora's Mask, Link is transported to another dimension, where the Mask itself is waiting for him to face Link once and for all. After a harsh battle, Link ultimately destroys the Mask's evil, and the Moon returns to the sky for good, bringing peace to all of Termina.

Other masks provide situational benefits without transforming Link. For example, the Great Fairy's Mask helps retrieve stray fairies in the four temples, the Bunny Hood increases Link's movement speed, and the Stone Mask renders Link invisible to most enemies. Certain masks are involved only in side-quests or specialized situations. Examples include the Postman's Hat, which grants Link access to items in mailboxes,[8] and Kafei's Mask, which initiates a long side-quest to locate a missing person.[9]

Other uses for music include manipulating the weather, calling Link's horse, and unlocking the four dungeons. Each transformation mask uses a different instrument: Deku Link plays the multi-horned "Deku Pipes", Goron Link plays a set of bongo drums tied around his waist, and Zora Link plays a guitar made from a large fish skeleton. Jackson Guitars created a limited edition 7-string replica of this guitar that was the grand prize in a contest in Nintendo Power, known as the "Jackson Zoraxe".[10]

Majora's Mask begins several months after Ocarina of Time.[14] Link seeks his fairy, Navi, who departed after the events of the previous game. During his search, he is ambushed by Skull Kid wearing a mysterious mask and his two fairy companions, siblings Tatl and Tael. They steal both his horse, Epona, and the Ocarina of Time. Link pursues them and falls into a trap; Skull Kid curses Link, transforming him into a Deku Scrub, but inadvertently leaves Tatl behind. With no other choice, Tatl guides Link to Clock Town. They meet the Happy Mask Salesman, who pressures Link into recovering the mask that Skull Kid stole, promising to break the curse if he succeeds. After three days, Link manages to locate Skull Kid and retrieve the Ocarina of Time but fails to get the mask. As the moon nears impact, Tael instructs Link to awaken Termina's four guardian deities. Link plays the Song of Time and returns to the day he first set foot in Termina.

Mistakenly believing that Link recovered the mask, the Happy Mask Salesman breaks Link's curse. He soon discovers that Link failed, flying into a rage. He explains that Skull Kid's mask is the eponymous Majora's Mask, which contains a powerful evil that can bring about the end of days. After he collects himself, the Happy Mask Salesman then sends Link to properly retrieve Majora's Mask. Link embarks on his quest by going to the regions that Tael mentioned: Woodfall, Snowhead, the Great Bay, and Ikana Canyon. Link learns that the four locations are cursed by Skull Kid's use of the mask. In Woodfall, the swamp is poisoned and the Deku princess was kidnapped. Snowhead has been plagued with an eternal winter, leaving the Gorons to starvation. Great Bay's ocean has been contaminated, turning its creatures into monsters. In Ikana, inhabitants are terrorized by a curse that brings the dead back to life. Through his travels, Link learns that Skull Kid cursed the land as revenge for feeling abandoned by his Giant friends when they became Termina's guardians. Tatl and Tael befriended and accompanied him in his mischief that would eventually lead to the theft of the mask, which has been corrupting him ever since. Under the mask's influence, Skull Kid forced the moon onto a collision course with Termina.

Majora's Mask first appeared in the media in May 1999, when Famitsu reported that a long-planned Zelda expansion for the 64DD was in development.[28] It had a playable demo at the Nintendo Space World exhibition on August 27, 1999.[29][30] The Space World demo included many elements from the final game, including the large clock that dominates the center of Clock Town, the timer at the bottom of the screen, and mask transformations.[31][32][32][33] In November, Nintendo announced a "Holiday 2000" release date.[34] The final title was announced in March 2000.[35]

The game served as the primary inspiration for the popular 2010s web serial and web series Ben Drowned by Alexander D. Hall, which helped define the creepypasta genre of online storytelling.[104][105][106] Content based on Majora's Mask has also appeared in the Super Smash Bros. series. A stage based on the Great Bay Coast area of the game, titled "Great Bay", appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.[107] Skull Kid also appears as a computer-controlled Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[108][109] and Ultimate, while the Moon appears as an Assist Trophy in Ultimate as well.[110] A Skull Kid-themed mask is available as customizable headgear to be worn by Mii characters in Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[111] and Ultimate.[112]

The game starts with Link, now the Hero of Time from Ocarina of Time, looking for Navi in the Lost Woods. Two fairies, Tatl and Tael, startle Epona and Link is knocked out after falling off. A Skull Kid wearing a mysterious mask appears and steals Epona and the Ocarina of Time then rides into the woods. Link then follows Skull Kid into a mysterious tree.Link rushes into the tree only to find out that there was a pit, which he fell into. He then lands in a dark room, lit up only by torches and an eerie light emitted by the ceiling.

Link gets the Ocarina of Time back and uses the Song of Time to transport him and Tatl back to the dawn of the first day. The Happy Mask Salesman turns Link back to a Hylian, leaving a mask behind to let him turn back to the Deku Scrub whenever he wants. Link then must awaken the four giants to prevent the Moon from falling and repeat the three days over and over until he succeeds. After saving the Deku Princess and removing the poison from the Southern Swamp, bringing the Snowhead region back to spring, saving the Zora eggs and clearing the fog from Great Bay, and bringing peace to souls in Ikana Canyon, the giants that Link awakened stop the Moon from crashing into Termina, but it is revealed that Majora's Mask had possessed Skull Kid and it then gives more power to the moon. Link goes into the moon where he defeats Majora's Mask with the help of the Fierce Deity's Mask if he chooses to get it. Link then returns to Hyrule and continues his search for Navi.

Majora's Mask is also strange because the main quest is rather short. This is compensated however with the abundance of side quests found in the game. Many of these side quests reward Link with various kinds of masks. If Link obtains all the masks in the game, he is rewarded with the most powerful one in the game right before the final battle. Because of the power of the final mask, the final boss can either be the easiest or one of the most difficult in the Zelda series.

Link will come across many masks on his journey, most of which are not necessary to complete the game. There are four transformation masks. The first one Link will receive is the Deku Mask of which he was cursed into by Skull Kid. The second transformation mask is received by playing the Song of Healing for the Spirit of Darmani (Hero of the Gorons), who begs Link to heal his soul. Once played, he will receive the Goron Mask. The third transformation mask is obtained after Link pushes a Zora by the name of Mikau (Guitarist for a Zora band called "The Indigo-Go's") to shore, and playing the Song of Healing to capture the spirit of Mikau into the Zora Mask which will allow Link to appear to be Mikau. The fourth and final transformation mask is not necessary to complete the game but dramatically makes Majora, the final boss, a breeze. To achieve this mask Link must have all 20 normal masks and give them to the kids on the Moon to play a game. Once all of Link's masks are gone the kid wearing Majora's Mask will feel sorry for Link and give him the powerful Fierce Deity's Mask.

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of different kinds of masks in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Some of them are required for beating the main story, some of them will help Link collect a Heart Piece, and some are only usable in very specific situations. Players will need to collect all twenty-three of them, however, if they want to unlock the final mask in the game.

Collecting all of the masks and filling out The Bombers Notebook is one of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask's biggest draws. Thanks to the three day time limit and an infinite amount of retries, players can attempt certain trails over and over again if they miss out on them the first time, something which is likely to happen since some of the masks listed below are rather difficult to get, especially for new players.

There are two different categories of masks in Majora's Mask. The first are the masks which Link uses to transform into different characters, and the second are the masks Link simply wears on his face while still remaining himself. Being that the transformation masks are required multiple times throughout both The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask's story and side missions, most will be listed last. In descending order, the most (and least useful) masks in Majora's Mask are as follows:
